Question of the Week: How would YOU improve the Forum?

TAMPA, FL - The next time you see the inside of the St. Pete Times Forum, it's going to look very different. What changes would you make? (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

With the $35 million renovation project currently taking place at the St. Pete Times Forum, we thought now would be a good time for some wishmaking. We know the seats are being replaced, party decks are being built and a massive entertainment stage with a pipe organ will be installed. But what else would we like to see?

If I let my imagination run wild, I can't think of anything more awesome than the Forum transforming into a robot that could patrol Tampa Bay (it would have multi-jurisdiction authority, of course), fighting crime on non-event nights.

On the more realistic end of the spectrum, I'll be happy if they just make the Terrace level look more comfortable and inviting. While fans in the lower levels have been welcomed to their seats with pictures of Tom Petty and Janet Jackson, fans sitting upstairs found their sections by looking for stenciled numbers spray-painted on wooden boards. That, plus the institutional teal and beige color scheme and the absolutely-no-frills concession stands, made it look like something left over from the '70s-era Soviet bloc. All that was missing was people in tattered gray overcoats huddling over trash can fires or waiting in line for shoes.

I'm pretty sure that I'll get my wish and that all will be addressed. But what about you? This week's question is a fantasy scenario: Pretend that you have direct access to Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and he is granting you one wish in regard to improvements to the St. Pete Times Forum. Money is no object but it has to be for the building, no player or personnel transactions. Otherwise, anything goes. What do you tell him you want?

Here are the answers we got from Raw Charge staffers and WB "Bill" Philp of Hockey Independent and Planet Puckhead. Let us know what YOU think in the comments!

Star-divide

John Fontana

What I'd like to see with the Forum doesn't touch on the fan experience as-so-much the franchise setting an example and being responsible.  I'd love to hear about the club installing solar cells on the roof of the building and harnessing the power of the sun for day-to-day electric use in the building like they do with Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Also, with the position of the building, right on the waterfront (where winds can get dicey), having a wind turbine specifically for the building would also work in a power-generating capacity.  Not all wind turbines are huge hulking windmills, Helix Wind is an example of something more subtle, as well as Diamond Wind Solutions.  It's a thought.  Renewable energy would never be enough power for the Forum's events, but it doesn't mean they can't contribute.

WB "Bill" Philp

Building enhancements, special discounts for season ticket holders and even a great hockey team are all necessary in creating a "World Class" organization. But, there is only one thing that will grow your business and bring people back, no matter what the Lightning's record is. That Mr. Vinik is a smiling, helpful and empowered, front line staff. From vendors to bathroom attendants, these people are your business cards and must make a good first impression and continue to cultivate your fan base.

Customers...yes even Lightning fans will turn their backs on a venue that doesn't deliver value. No matter how good the hockey is, if the fan, their family or their friends are treated rudely by the Forum staff, eventually they will watch the games at home or at an establishment that adds value to their experience.

No one trains customer service anymore and Mr. Vinik, you need to stop looking at your Forum staff members like throw away, easily replaceable parts and hire and train real, empowered people that give legendary customer service. No matter how good your executives, coaches and players are at their specific jobs, they are not the face of the franchise. They do not have customer contact. Your ticket scanners, security staff and ushers are the most important people in your organization.

Put your money into better hiring practices and exemplary customer service training. Bad customer service is the norm these days. How many times do you walk away from a business saying to yourself, "Wow, that person was really friendly, respectful and helpful?"  Probably not many, but I bet you can still remember those few times vividly.

Treat me like I count; Treat me the way you want to be treated. I'll be back and spend my hard earned money again and again.

Tina Robinson

I'm not sure about the practicality, but since we're talking anything we would like to see, here goes: I'd love to see an arena with an ice skating rink in it.  No, not the one the players are on, but another rink (not necessarily regulation size) that parents could take those kids who are too high strung or overly sugar-medicated to sit still
for an entire hockey game.

This rink would serve multiple purposes - First, give those "sugar-medicated" kids and their frazzled parent(s) something to do other than distract the fans around them trying to watch the game.

Second, it would give all those highly intoxicated "I could do better than (insert player name here) did on that play" kind of folks a place they could immediately go and try to show their equally intoxicated buddies just how well they could do, to the amusement of all.

Or Third, it would give the next generation's Vincent Lecavalier or Martin St. Louis the opportunity to immediately go try what they just saw their favorite player do on the ice.

So a second rink inside the arena could be very useful for everybody that attends an NHL game, no matter whether you actually use the rink or not.

Cassie McClellan

I don't think this is really a feature out East, but where I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, the sports facilities were trending towards having a concourse open to the playing surface. In Safeco Field in Seattle, you can be standing in line buying garlic fries and still watch the game live from where you're standing. The first place I saw this was at a major junior arena in Canada. I was in Kamloops for the start of Kamloops Blazers training camp one year, and the whole place is wide open like that. You can watch the game from inside the concession stand if there's no one in line. I know that part of the St. Pete Times Forum renovation plans include for spots like this throughout the arena, but the places I've mentioned the entire facility was like this. It makes the game less formal and more fan-friendly, in my opinion, when the entire main concessions concourse is open to the playing surface.

Matt Amos (Don't Trade Vinny

I think it would be sweet if the Forum found a way to put another ice rink in the building that would allow customers to skate before the game, during intermissions, on off-days etc.  Ice time is at a premium in Florida anyway, and with one more rink it would open up a ton of possibilities, not to mention create a very unique attraction for fans.

On top of that, there's the business side of it.  If done right, the rink could also be used for rec/beer leagues, birthday parties, etc.  The money earned from those events would be nickels compared to the other events at the Forum (games, concerts, etc.) but every little bit helps.

So there you have some wishful thinking from us (and Tina and Matt are not allowed to sit next to each other in class any more). Now it's your turn; if Jeff Vinik gave you access to the checking account, what one improvement would you add to the Forum?

I can picture that...

It would be cool, unless there’s some risk of inducing seizures. Then it’s still cool, just not as.

LOL.. thanks Clark

Yeah, Matt copied off my paper.

On the other hand, John and Bill gave us some economical and customer service oriented stuff.. geez, like a “grownup”. (But still good ideas at that)

Me? I was thinking like a kid in a candy shop. So was Matt, apparently. :)

The Everett Silvertips – a major junior squad – have an adjoining rink to their arena. You can’t just walk between the rink and the game, tho. They’re pretty separate, from what I understand.

Win or lose, I'm proud of these guys.

I like the open concourse idea too, Cassie. The local AAA baseball team (Charlotte Knights) have a very nice open concourse at their stadium (Knights Castle…yeah, yeah, I know, but that is the name, I swear…)

And you’re right it’s nice to be standing in the beer line (that’s almost always the longest besides the women’s bathroom line) and be able to see what’s going on on the field, or ice. Something better about seeing it, even from a distance, as opposed to watching it on a TV screen.

I’m okay with the candy shop too, especially if they have that extra skating rink.

Improving the forum.

First of all I am impressed with everything the ownership is doing to improve the product. Having had seats in the Terrace level the past few years I would love to see it more appealing to the customer. Starting from the elevator up, It just seem’s like the corner of a garage up there and would love to see it more appealing and not so drab. Also I think it would be cool to open an area in the arena that features everything team orientated from day one to current with displays of players and team memorabilia sort of like a hall of fame would have but just for the Lightning. You could feature Items from other teams periodically also. I also would like to see the players wives involved with the fans somehow if possible. Maybe a couple a game just meeting fans and answering people questions.

Thank you!

how bout painting the building with a new fresh look? ya it would take awhile but a clean new coat of blue paint or grey and blue and have things match. not so mismatched and what not.
and a better ground floor area where the players play soccer and warm up. its just concrete like garage floor with things stored randomly. maybe clean it up with carpet and build storage containers or curtains to cover things.

bigger ref lockerrooms. ours are tiny and there is more than one so the refs have to split up.
better ice making machine. as much as we take down and put up our ice we should have a state of the art machine. ive played on the forum ice multiple times and it is incredibly soft and slow. doesnt even compare to the ice at the brandon rink. all you people asking for an added rink. the only place they could put it is in the parking lot ajacent to the parking garage and the forum but thats a lot of parking money lost each game those are $20 spots. and it really wouldnt draw a lot of business other than game nite plus people would want to bring their skates and then have to put them somewhere during the game. i do agree the staff should be better. and get real food places like chilis, chickfila, mcdonalds/BK, applebees etc and set them up so you can sit at tables on the concourse and still be able to watch the games while you eat. the food is so overpriced cuz they get these random off market places like owned by the rink besides outback. instead of having just storage down on the ground level (this is not outside im talking about inside like down where you go into the lockerrooms and stuff theirs a big concrete area around the building where they store crap and stuff) why not make it nice and make it a fan zone for before and after games? put in hardest shot booths, targets, NHL 11 video game areas, booths for charities and drawings, team store, areas to see the players coming out and get things signed or before games watching the guys warmup with the soccer ball and stuff,

Dude it was a fantasy question, ok?

I’m all for the amenities and better ice, dressing rooms and other things for the players and staff as well as the fans, but this was about something each of us would like to see if money was no object. It was MY opinion of what I would like to have seen…

This week’s question is a fantasy scenario

On the less realistic side

Teleportation stations providing direct access to/from North Carolina. I’d even buy season tickets.

More realistic. . . I dunno, I’ve never been there.

You don’t have to have been there. Just throw something out there that you’d like to see any hockey arena have. It’s a wish list, after all.

In that case

I want a “win button”—at my seat only, of course.

Actually all arenas need to make sure the ladies restrooms are adequate. I won’t go into all of the facilities necessary, except to say that there should be restrooms for mothers with children and ones for women alone/

I've always wondered...

…why they don’t replace all urinals with toilets (and stalls) and designate who uses which restrooms on an event-by-event basis as needed. I know that typically women need more restrooms than men but I can’t imagine they get much use at something like lingerie football. Seems like they’d give themselves all the flexibility they need by making them all multi-use.

by Clark J Brooks on Jul 21, 2011 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll tell you why

You couldn’t pay me to go to the bathroom in a public men’s room, much less to take my young child in there. I’d find a bucket and a tent first.

The other thing is that there are things ladies need in the restrooms that men find gross.

Scientific studies have proven that women’s public bathrooms are consistently dirtier than men’s public bathrooms. Although, it’s really men’s bad aim that makes things less than ideal. Too many beers, I think.

But I’m not talking about unisex restrooms; I think most reasonable people would have a problem with that. I mean restrooms that could be adapted as necessary. Justin Bieber concert on Thursday? Let’s have 80/20 women’s rooms to men’s. Lingerie football on Friday? Clean them, flip some signs and we’ll have 80/20 women’s rooms. They could even make changes on the fly during an event itself if necessary.

by Clark J Brooks on Jul 22, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay. Still, there are “facilities” that ladies need in a restroom that men would seriously not like. If there were a way to overcome that problem it could be workable.

Also a real need for child-sized facilities—toilets, sinks, trash cans, and water fountains. Please please please someone make children’s restrooms a reality in public places.

And may I just take a moment to note the weirdness of discussing the in-depth details of restrooms on a hockey blog? Interesting and worthwhile, but slightly odd.

not to offend the three of you

Since we have a jillion female hockey fans here, but is there not usually a pretty strong majority of guys at games, or is that just a stereotype?

At most places, there should be more women’s bathrooms than men’s. I remember once at Dollywood waiting over 45 minutes for my mother and sister to get out of the restroom when the guys had no line. But if there are significantly more men there, I thought that might even it out. I don’t think I’ve been to a sporting event where the men’s room didn’t have lines out the door during all major breaks in play.

Arenas aren’t just used for sports. They are used for concerts, conventions, graduations, etc. Bridgestone Arena has even been used for a giant church service once or twice.

And one huge difference between men’s and women’s restrooms is that, you know, boys stand up to pee and girls don’t. So the same square footage is more efficient for men than women. In order to facilitate the same number of patrons in the women’s room you have to have more women’s rooms.

ah, I didn't think about all the other events

and I understand the reasons for more women’s rooms in general; I was just asking about hockey games in particular. I haven’t been to enough to draw an informed conclusion on whether there’s actually a lot more men.

I actually didn’t think Clark’s idea was too bad, provided that everything was thoroughly cleaned between events (which it should be anyways). But, then again, there are probably different priorities. Clean, short wait, and nobody standing over my shoulder is quite sufficient for me.

I have a few ideas.

How about a sort of Lightning Hall of Fame area? Obviously the franchise hasn’t been around all that long in the big scheme of things, but just an area with various artifacts and pictures and things to honor the team’s history.

Another idea is, instead of using a second hockey rink to keep rowdy kids in check, just build a children’s play area. I know the Magic have a big one at the Amway Center, and I think that would be a nice addition.

I loved the rain jerseys, and love to use them in home games for the Bolts on the NHL video games.

Though, among the primaries over the years, I would’ve loved if the Bolts had kept the original blue and adapted it to the sweaters that they ultimately won the ‘04 Cup in. Would’ve been a perfect scheme and template.

Another in game or pregame entertainment feature the forum could have is a simulated rain storm inside the arena….

First dim the lights inside the arena
Second turn on multiple turbo fans hanging the rafters to create a whirlwind effect
Third flash lights as if it were lightning strikes and of course play a thunder sound bite
Fourth create a rain drop affect but at a very small scale of course nothing too much
Finish it off with a song to amp up the crowd

If it were up to me, I’d go with a more open view of the ice from the concourse (they are doing that). I’d also move toward more organ music and less piped in music during stoppages. Nothing is more brutal than an icing call, then 15 seconds of just awful, blaring, crappy stadium music as you sit there and beg the linesman to drop the puck, not so the game will start again, just so that the music wil finally stop. It sounds like with this new organ they are putting in, they are gonna want to use it, and hopefully this happens.

Also, ushers should only be there to help solve problems when they arise. I’d rather have an usher who doesn’t give a shit than an usher who’s nice and friendly and yet really strict about everything. If there’s a wide open block of seats and someone moves into them or goes and sits with friends or whatever, who cares as long as it’s not a sellout or they’re not taking someone’s seat. The Ice Palace ushers are actualy pretty good about this already, though.

In conclusion, the arena is pretty good as it is, and the improvements they are doing should cover most of what we need. Turn down the stupid piped in music, or turn it off, and we’re pretty much gonna be good to go.

We need a good goal song!

The Rangers song always gets the crowd nuts in MSG, Chicago has that annoying doot-do-da dootle dootle song. My sugestion is we use the chorus to brittany spears “till the world ends” that would get the crowd nuts. Not a Spears fan but it would fit nicely give it a listen tell me what you think. Of course when Marty scores “Louie-Louie” is appropriate but Vinny needs a song too being the Capt. My suggestion is Lou Cristie,s chorus to “Lightning strikes me again” -" I cant stop myself-Lightning stiking again!
