Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning: Wake me up when it's over
So is anyone else tired of the mass hysteria and drama swirling around the Steven Stamkos deal?
Poor Erik Erlendsson from the Tampa Tribune. That man has the patience of a saint. He's been answering the same questions over and over and over and over and over again about Stamkos for about a week now on Twitter. I would've gone postal a long time ago, if I were him.
I can completely understand why fans aren't happy about the situation. Stamkos is a key player for the Tampa Bay Lightning, after all. His goal production alone - no matter what his age - is enough to sign him for a good, long time. And then when you do add in the fact that he's only 21 years old, well, that makes it even more important.
But, really, all of this panic shows a serious lack of trust in JM Steve Yzerman. And it also shows a lack of basic understanding in how the system works.
Stamkos is a restricted free agent. Pay attention to that word, "restricted". It means that while other teams can make offers, the Lightning have the ultimate final say. And Yzerman has already said that the Lightning would match anything any other team would offer.
So, you see, the panic is completely unfounded. Yes, another team can make an insane offer. But, it won't get them anywhere - which is likely why no one actually has so far. Sure, they talk about it - all kinds of rumors are flying, after all - but no one's been reported as actually having made a serious offer.
And all of these insane trade rumors are just nutty. Seriously. People think it's a good idea to trade half the team just to keep Stamkos? What good would that do? Yeah, you'd have a great player on the team, but then no one to play with him. I don't know about you, but I sort of liked that whole playoffs thing, you know?
To be honest, this whole hysteria is making me not want to read anything about hockey, let alone actually write anything about it. If all people are going to do is wildly speculate about Stamkos in the comments, then why bother? I'm not a big fan of drama in the first place; it makes me tired. And if writing something is just inviting drama to come visit me, then there's almost no point in posting stuff up.
The fact is of the matter is that Stamkos is staying with the Lightning. Period. And no one's going to be traded in order to keep him. All that we're waiting for now is to find out for how long and how much. And whether that takes until tomorrow or until September, well, that's up to Stamkos, his agent, and Yzerman. The fans don't figure into that at all.
So calm down and relax. Panicking isn't going to hurry anything along. And really, there are other things to talk about and speculate over that are far more uncertain. Like, NHL realignment, if the Norfolk Admirals will stay the AHL farm team for the Lightning, how the renovations are going at the St. Pete Times Forum, and of course rookie camp.
And if you want to chat about any of that, then I'm all ears.

Did someone run out of Swedish Fish in their underground STAMMERGEDDON bunker?
;)
you're not defending him are you?
are you his mom?

But I don’t have a Stammergeddon bunker – and I still have some Swedish Fish left! Actually, I just have a very low BS threshold. And drama of any sort makes me tired. ;o)

The way the Philly media is perpetuating this BS, I’m getting ready to build a Stammergeddon bunker of my own up here…

Yeah, they’re not helping. At. All. Neither are the Toronto media. Lightning fans seem to be a rather high strung bunch, particularly after the past few years of ugliness, and any little thing sets them off into a tizzy. Ugh.

Agreed.
This would’ve gone away already if it weren’t for some of the crazy sports reporters there feeding the monster.

It’s pretty bad, it’s bad enough that you have to read about theories where steve y is considered an idiot by all(I am looking at you maple leaf fans that want us to take on your bad contracts) but we have to deal with the spelling that is horrible as well “lightning submit there final offer” :(. (I had to retype to spell wrong on that)
oh and
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Purcelllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, better Cassie?
Er…maybe? :oD

Here's another fact that people are dismissing
Victor Hedman. He’s due for a contract renewal next year. You want to price him out just to get Stamkos signed?
Some fans want Stamkos signed, period… Some want to see how the chips fall and THEN react. Others are thinking about the full franchise here – not just a single player getting put under contract.
I’m tired of reading about those with the myopic view that Stamkos has GOT to be put under contract at all costs and Yzerman is (insert negative phrase here) because the process has taken to long.
It’s why I hate the “Free Agent Frenzy” moniker. Everything in Free Agency is presented as having to have been done yesterday / ASAP, when in truth, a player making a decision on a new contract ought to take a lot more time to think about all aspects of a new deal, or signing with a new club, in a new city.
Typing is an adventure, and reading should be, too!
Raw Charge.
That’s because all they see is STAMMERSTAMMERSTAMMER!!!11 Ugh. Where’s the fun in speculating long term, anyways? :o\

take care of stammer and purcell and then evaluate the talent of the one year deals given this offseason and resign hedman to a good year. Hopefully soon we wont have to keep paying prospal for that buyout…..

sorry to a good contract and evaluate next offseason*

Prospal’s buyout is ~1.17M ($1,166,667M to be exact) through the 2014-15 season.

I agree with John
And this was exactly the discussion I got into with a couple of Bolts fans the other day on Twitter… he is just 1 player. A very good one and will probably be a great one, but still, just 1 player.
I am not (if I were GM) going to gut the team and handcuff it so that other moves that may come along can’t be made. The Lightning tried that back when….it didn’t work then and it won’t work now, even more so because of the cap. And with the new CBA coming, who’s to say what will happen with the cap. I actually expect a rollback of some sort. I know the contracts would be rolled back to fit (I think) but still…
(Sarcasm now on)
Greedy agents, greedy player, stupid GM… take you pick for what is the cause of it all right now
(Sarcasm now off)
I’ll trust Stevie Y to get the job done in a manner that won’t hurt the team and will be fair to the player as well. I doubt seriously that media or fan pressure matters one whit to him. He’s not that kind of GM. Thankfully.

Poor Cassie :)
I admit that I’ve turned off pretty much everything that isn’t “The Tampa Bay Lightning Announce Stamkos ACTUALLY Signed.” Which is everything, I guess. (tho, I’ve kept Erlendsson on my twitter feed, just to be constantly reassured by a voice of reason.)
If you want a break you can go over to OtF and watch the fans dismantle the Predators and lynch David Poile. That’s always fun. (I exaggerate, of course, but they’re trying to trade Pekka again.)

I didn’t even log onto my own blog – this one! – for two days just to avoid it all.

Dany Heatly traded again?
This. So very, very much this.
Thanks for your voice of reason, Cassie. If I could rec the article from my phone, I would.
"[The Lightning] are uncanny. When they want to get a goal, it's like they just snap their fingers or hit a button. They just dial it up. You can see it. It's like they flip a switch. When they are down, it's just like they think, 'we know we are going to score.' I don't know what it is, it leaves [the opposition] flabbergasted." - Mike Knuble, 3 May 2011

Prospal’s buyout? Yes, it counts against the cap just like any of the other player salaries. There is also a small buyout still on the books for this year for Todd Fedoruk’s buyout as well. It’s somewhere around 350K or so. You can check capgeek.com if you’d like to see exactly what the Bolts have on payroll.

WEBERGEDDON!!!! (in Nashville)
One tweet and the universe is falling apart.
I’m turning off the computer now.
Goaleez R weerd.

Never believe the rumour mongerer's
But pay close attention to the way free agency, arbitration and improvements within your own division effect the balance of power. Purcell should be inline for a $3mil payday through arbitration. With Stamkos angling for $7.5mil we’re looking at a cheap vet to fill out the 4th line and 13 forward spots as the salaries of Wright, Ashton or Panik would put us over the $60mil salary limit and I just can’tr see the Bolts going there despite having a deep pocketed owner. Someone like Tambellini or Connor could probably be gotten cheap. If Stamkos asks for more than $8mil and Purcell is awarded more than $3mil, then you are looking at issues next season with entry level deals ready to join the Bolts and Hedman needing to be resigned. Yzerman and Brisebois know all this and are walking the tightrope efficiently thus far.
Don in St Pete
Agreed with pretty much all of this
I’m still hoping that we can get Stamkos for under $8 and Purcell for under $3 and then get a 3rd line signing that mimics what we did last year with Bergenheim. But I think that’s about the best we can do without moving some money around on the trade market.
