Preseason Game 2: St. Louis Blues at Tampa Bay Lightning, from Orlando
The Tampa Bay Lightning lost to the St. Louis Blues 4-3 Wednesday night in preseason action, the team's first game on Florida ice since defeating the Boston Bruins in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals in May at the St. Pete Times Forum. Ostensibly a home game for the Lightning, it took place at the Amway Center in Orlando, home of the NBA's Orlando Magic.
A crowd of 11,688 turned out to see the Lightning tie the game three different times but ultimately fall short in the second meeting in as many nights between the two teams. The Blues defeated the Lightning 3-1 in St. Louis on Tuesday. This was the first NHL game played at the facility, which opened in October of 2010 replacing the old Amway Arena.
The Lightning got goals from Marc-Andre Bergeron, Cory Conacher and Eric Brewer, all on the power play. Each tied the score at the time but St. Louis responded quickly each time, eventually sealing the win on a goal from Adam Cracknell with 2:20 remaining in the game.
NOTES: Mattias Ohlund racked up 17 penalty minutes, all in the first period, including a five-minute major and a game misconduct call for elbowing...As was the case in St. Louis the night before, a video tribute and a moment of silence was observed in honor of those from "the hockey family" lost over the summer...head coach Guy Boucher was impressed by the Amway Center: "I knew it was new but I've been in a lot of new buildings that aren't as nice as this one. Everything is first class."...Dwayne Roloson started in goal, his first game action of the preseason. He stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.

Obviously pre-season
The Bolts didn’t play a terrible game, just not a very good one. My sense is because the “big boys” (Thompson and Downie in particular) played last night, tonight’s roster was a bit under-sized. While that meant they were really quick, it also meant the bigger Blues (Ryan Reaves for one big example) played a physical game and knocked quite a few Bolts players off the puck.
As to the many questions of CAustin about Janus: I thought he looked good overall for this season going to be his first in the AHL. The first goal was a weird one: bounced of Blair Jones who partially blocked the shot from the point, and deflected in to the goal—a real pin-baller. He made a couple of saves that I thought were very good—including a quick front post-back post slide to deny a completely open back door.
On the power play, it was obvious the first team PP unit had played together last year. MAB, Brewer, VL4, Marty and Stammer flowed pretty well considering this was preseason. Just as obvious was the inexperience of the players Boucher rotated in and out of the second unit. I think the only consistent player on the second unit I saw was Blair Jones, though Namestnikov got a lot of time on the #2 unit, too.
My overall sense is I’m just as disappointed in the play of Connolly as I was impressed by the play of Conacher and Namestinkov. Conacher gets my vote as making the squad, just beating Jonesy. Namestnikov obviously has to get bigger and stronger, but he knew where to be on the ice, and actually had some good time on the PK unit. The force is strong with this one, I think.

Note to self: never send a non-goalie person to do your scouting for you. ;-)
Did he control his rebounds? Did he get himself too far out of position or over commit (tho if the ice is bad you sometimes slide more than you expect)? Did he keep his composure? :) Thank you. I know I;m being a pain, but I get enthusiastic.

His rebound control wasn’t bad—at least bad enough that I remember, less than 24 hours after the game. I do remember noticing how tentative he is to leave his crease. Probably a symptom of a bit of nerves (completely understandable).

Yeah. Tentative is not his style at all. I’d think nerves were likely playing a role there.

I got it—I didn’t have time to send it before going to work this morning. I’ll send it at lunch or by the end of the day.
It’s nearly 5mb…is that okay?

The view from section 209
here are a few things that stood out to me…
First off, Conacher seems to have stolen all my excitement that I had about seeing Connolly, Tyler Johnson. Even though neither had a bad game, it was more that neither brought as much as Conacher did.
A few things i noticed about Conacher was that he is a furious back checker because he skates fantabulously, and just like his goal he scored shows he isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty to make a play.
I liked what I saw from Matt Gilroy tonight overall, and Bruno Mars(Gervais) seems to be a good fit as long as he stops falling down and getting knocked off the puck. Brewer and Bergeron played great.
Overall the shoe in forwards on the team(4, 91, 26, 16) played horribly. Arrant passes all over the place and flubbed shots…They clearly aren’t prepared for regular season yet but ya i know its early. Granted the bolts power play looked OK at a few moments but there was a whole lot of slop out there, despite the 3 PPG.
The other young guys like Panik and Namestnikov were a disappointment to me, I guess I hoped for some creativity seeing as though its preseason and they are supposed to showcase the skills they have.
I kept thinking the ice was bad but couldn’t tell from up there does anyone know otherwise?
On a side note the new home jerseys looked weird for about the first 5 minutes and after that I liked them…
Reports were that the ice was a bit bad, which may be part of the reason for wild passes and falling down. You’re not the only one to say they seemed unprepared and not on the same page, though.

One more goalie note for you, CA
Roli was channeling his inner Mike Smith a couple of times last night, leaving his crease completely while the play was going on in the slot. Made me a little nervous, to be honest: a feeling with which I’m not familiar when watching Roli.

huh. Like challenging more or something?

Not challenging. Actually skating to try to play the puck.
Once he got so caught out, he “accidentally” skated backwards into the goal post and knocked it off its moorings. “Accidentally” as in how his mask also comes off “accidentally” when killing penalties. He’s lucky he didn’t get 2 for delay of game.

Is that the first official “GET OFF MY LAWN!” of the season?

is it just me?
or should we trade janus? he doesnt seem like hes very good on any level… his numbers speak for themselves. i dont think hes had an above .500 win season yet? I mean come on he was 12-13 in the ECHL last year… and 2-5 in AHL. you gotta be better than that…
Patience.
He looked pretty good last night, all things considered.
Furthermore, the dude has yet to complete an entire AHL season (full career stats here). It is common knowledge goalies take a. long. time. to. mature. Jaro will be no different. Let him mature in the AHL for a couple more seasons before we have this conversation, but at this point I think he’s going to be an above average NHL goalie.

First, his record is a lot better than you give him credit for. You’re looking at the wrong stats there. Games won is a team stat, not a goalie stat, despite wins being credited to goalies. Goalies don’t score. The relevant numbers over the past three seasons speak well of him: 2.07 GAA and .922 SV% in Norfolk in 2009-10, 2.81 and .918 in Erie in 2009-10, and as far as the Everblades last year: 3.06 and .912 while battling injury. He hasn’t been in a stable situation in all that time and has still come up with those numbers.
Second, yes, he needs to learn control. But he’s young (he turned 22 yesterday) and he has potential. He’s never seen NHL action before; there’s a learning curve. On Tuesday he went 0.944 (17/18); we don’t know what his stats were for last night yet (on bad ice, remember)
Third, he’s not competing for an NHL job. He’s competing to back up Tokarski in Norfolk. He’s had a good camp and the coaches are impressed with the progress he’s made. He needs stability in coaching and training. Give him time to develop and adjust.

yeah, lets trade the #4 system goalie now that Tokarski is hurt and Nagle isn’t up to muster yet.
Tom, your timing is horrible in suggesting these hings.
