Question of the Week: Brendan Shanahan and the Suspension Videos
This pre-season, I have seen more questionable hits and subsequent suspensions than I can remember in recent history. Brendan Shanahan, the new head honcho of suspension giving, aka the Senior Vice President of Player Safety, has had to hit the ground running.
In addition to replacing Colin Campbell, the NHL has Shanahan producing videos that explain why a suspension has been given out. In each video, Shanahan introduces himself, shows footage of the play being evaluated, explaining which rule was violated and citing the factors that go into the severity of the suspension. Haven't seen one yet? Click here, here or here for examples.
So this week, the question I asked was:
What are your thoughts on the Brendan Shanahan's suspensions and video explanations of the suspensions so far?
After the jump we have the answers from our crew here at Raw Charge. Please do share your take on the question in the comments.
John Fontana - Managing Editor Raw ChargeOverdue. The video explanations can be seen as unnecessary, but the clarity is greatly appreciated. It shows accountability and confidence in decisions. The harshness of the fines and the suspensions might seem stiff, but they are necessary. You're not going to encourage people to use their heads on ice by simply slapping their wrist, or being contradictory and inconsistent with rule enforcement. You have to show there are consequences to careless actions. It's the consequences, or the lack-there-of, under Colin Campbell, that made NHL disciplinary action the "Wheel of Justice" joke that it was.
Cassie McClellan - Managing Editor Raw Charge
After reading the Shanahan interview on Puck Daddy, I like where he's going with it. He says his goal is to make videos so that the players know what they're doing wrong, and that allowing the public to see them is intended as intentional "eavesdropping" on their conversation. That's good PR right there. But what's more, we all know what's going on. It's not just the players who have no idea, but neither do the arm chair coaches watching it on TV. It's nice that Shanahan wants everyone on the same page - GMs, coaches, players, AND fans. I hope that he's able to keep it up, and that it doesn't just disappear after a month or two.

Brendan Shanahan's suspension videos might be one of the most innovative developments in recent professional sports. After dealing with Colin Campbell's muddled regulations, having such a decisive decision presented on video is almost a godsend. In two minutes or less, Shanahan explains what happened, why it was against the rules and what went into making the individual decision (i.e. repeat offender). He does not mince words, which leads to an informative and educational experience.
On a lighter note, Shanahan looks like he's trying out for some sort of game show. The set is very high-tech and he has the loose suit and provocative hand position down flat. I smell a series: "I'm Brendan Shanahan and it's time to play...WHEEL...OF...JUSTICE!"
Clark Brooks - Staff Writer / Ridiculously inconsistent trickle of consciousness
The biggest things you're looking for from that office is integrity and consistency. The videos lend themselves to both aspects in that it creates a level of transparency. The worst thing he could have done is issue edicts from behind the closed doors of a Manhattan office. This is the opposite of that.
So that's our staff's take on the videos, what do you think?

A fantastic and very welcome addition
On both parts. At the point where the league was at under Colin.. anything is an improvement.
Take out the fact that I also happen to be a huge fan of Shanny, for obvious reasons. Still think this was the league’s best move in a very long time. The league has been under a bad habbit of waiting to make changes, until something has to be done. That something has finally been done and couldn’t be any happier with the outcome thus far. Even though my fellow Wing’s fans knew what this might will mean, when it was announced Shanny would be taking the job.
Didn’t take long, that’s for sure.. already reports coming out of accusations of Detroit favoritism against Shanny. Regarding a hit invloving the Red Wing’s Danny Cleary on the Penguin’s Philip Samuelsson. Guess he’ll have a chance to “save face” today when dealing with the Smith on Smith incident that happened in last night’s DET/CHI game.
Bottom line… something had to be done and for the first time, in a long time.. the NHL is heading the right direction and could end up setting the tone for all of pro sports.

Well Said Joe!
Like others have said, Shanahan is providing a certain clarity that didn’t exist in previous years. The fact he’s making these videos public speaks volumes for his courage and commitment to fair and just punishment. It also takes a large pair to open yourself up to the potentially intense scrutiny. I find it very refreshing!
By the way……….
About a month ago I read a comment of yours, before you changed pictures, and I clicked on that wild pic to get another look. Up popped your bio. I took a quick read and experienced a bit of deja vu. You talked about what brought you to Florida. I had heard that story about 22 years ago. You must be Steve’s son!

Yes, I do know your Dad. Great guy!! I can’t say we were best buddies or anything but over time we have had more than a handful of interesting hockey conversations. Both from Mowtown and all. How’s his back holding up?
It’s a small world indeed.

Yes, indeed it is
His back is okay, ’bout as good as anyone with back problems, I guess, haha. How/where did you know him from?? Must have been a while ago, if you said 22 years.

Ditto pretty much everything above.
While awkward to watch, I think the videos are a great tool. In the videos, I especially like the reasoning behind each: past history, positioning of the players, etc. It really helps make it appear to be less of a guessing game than with The Colin.

I hope that things will calm down form him soon
so that he can make a “this is why this was legal” video or two. That will go a long way towards indicating the scope of this “crackdown” or whatever it is. I like the general trend and think it’s a positive step towards getting some of the worst infractions out of the game, but I have a slight worry that it won’t last. Perhaps that’s my cynical side, but when the games count, will we see more and more contingencies being used to justify inconsistencies in the rulings? Like I say, it’s a good first step, but I’m waiting to see if he can keep it up.

Surprised their hasn't been more of a response for this week's question
It is a rather important topic, that will no doubt, change the NHL and possibly all of sports. Not to mention have a constant effect, in so many different ways, for everyone involved.. including fans. I suppose it’s still a bit early on though, for all factors.

So here's one way to test it...
Now it’s Bugsy’s turn. If we disagree with Shanahan’s interpretation of the video, but he’s consistent (given his interpretation), how much will people complain? Hits like this one, where it’s both hard to tell who leaned into whom or what could have been done to avoid head contact, are going to really test people’s patience. Campbell was infamous not only for the inconsistency in punishments once a determination of “guilt” was made but also for inconsistency in determining whether an infraction even took place.
In other words, it’s time for Shanny to put on his big boy panties and get down to establishing consistency in both evaluating the video and in determining the punishment.
