Question of the Week: Would YOU buyout Lecavalier?

Photo

If you have been listening to the Marek vs. Wyshynski podcast* then you might have heard a hypothetical question come up once or twice on whether you would buy out player X (with no repercussions to your cap hit) if you had one free buyout allowed after the NHL's next Collective Bargaining Agreement has been renegotiated and ratified.

Why would you do this? Let's say for instance that the new CBA causes the cap to down next season or they change how they calculate the cap which currently just keeps increasing every single season at a pretty high rate. Or maybe you just have a bad contract that you want to get out of, and a free buyout could help out how your team in constructed.

So this question got me thinking whether the other writers at Raw Charge would consider buying out Vincent Lecavalier, here's what I asked:

If during the summer during the new CBA negotiations there is an option to buyout ONE player on your team with no repercussions to your team in the future, do you buyout Lecavalier? Why or why not?

Our answers after the jump and let us know in the comments on what YOU would do

I don't know that Vincent Lecavalier should be bought out, even without it being counted against the cap, though his contract is certainly an issue. It isn't necessarily the monetary amount that's the problem; it's the length. When I first saw the numbers after he'd signed it, my very first thought was (mostly in regards to the length), "No good can come of this."

I think a better option instead would be if renegotiation of standing contracts is on the table - and gets accepted - during the CBA discussions. Otherwise, this whole thing is going to get ugly. There's no way that Vinny's going to be able to finish out this contract as it stands and maintain a good public standing, no matter where he may be playing.

Would buying him out help the team? Probably. But he's practically an institution in Tampa, and seeing him go would mean an end of an era for the Lightning. I think someone who's meant so much to that community deserves better treatment than that. But, in the end, hockey is a business, so...I don't know. It's hard for me to even imagine a Lightning team without Vinny.

One free buyout in 2012--do I choose Vinny? Not unless Ohlund retires. Ohlund contributes less and even if he plays again he's a drain on the team's defense. Worse still is the possibility that he could never play again and the Lightning would have to keep paying him until 2016 as long as he chose not to retire. Vinny's not at that point yet.

IF Ohlund retired and freed the team of his contract then I'd consider Vinny's contract. Or IF the buyout would come in, say, three years, I'd consider it. But at this point, I'd rather pay Vincent Lecavalier an obscene amount of money to be the team's second highest scorer than to pay Mattias Ohlund to sit on his couch for 4 years.

Clark Brooks - Staff Writer / Ridiculously inconsistent trickle of consciousness

Anything having to do with salary management is completely beyond my comprehension, and I mean ANYTHING and COMPLETELY. For example, I'm pretty sure if I can find a way to get my car to run on dreams and starlight between now and Friday at 2:00, my check to the phone company won't bounce. So I would keep Vinny around. Then maybe I could ask him to give me some of his old, used money.

*Bangs head against desk repeatedly.

No, give Ohlund his Social Security check.

Or buy a gun and shoot me.

*If you haven't been listening to Marek vs. Wyshynski, then why haven't you?

Disclaimer: This is by no means a suggestion that we should buy out Lecavalier and it's not even a serious question since there is no such clause of each team getting a free buyout, we're just having fun here.

I'd say yeah, and then renegotiate a deal with Vinny that's closer to his actual market value.

Ohlund’s contract sucks, but buying his contract out as it stands wouldn’t be a horrible situation….between the two contracts, it’s by far the easier to buy out. So if I had to choose between the two, it’d be Vinny.

Then again, I’ve been harping on how Vinny’s contract is handicapping the Bolts right now, so I may be the lone crazy guy.

It's just frustrating.

They have such a great young core on the team to build around, but their upside is always going to be limited as a result of Vinny’s deal. I feel for Yzerman…not a good situation to inherit.

Which is why I suggested allowing renegotiations on standing contracts in the next CBA – solves lots of problems. And, probably creates a few more. But you take the good with the bad, right?

Very good idea but I sincerely doubt players’ union will want that to go down.

Yep – I don’t think they will, either.

Still, there are certain cases (Vinny’s in particular) where you can see a guy wanting to renegotiate his contract so he isn’t hamstringing his team (especially if he happens to be the captain of the team).

Might be plausible.

Yes it's frustrating

which is why no one ever says how much better it was before Vinik and Yzerman came along.

Every team that goes through this sort of transition has this kind of problem. Maybe not to the tune of $10 million dollars, but to one extent or another.

I love the idea. But, they likely wouldn’t pay him twice, which is what they’d essentially be doing. Sure, they’d get that ungainly contract off the books, but then they’d have to draw up a new one – that would cover some, if not all, of the same amount of time he’s already got a contract to play for now.

I thought Vinik has swimming pools of money, so why not pay him twice?

Well, if the premise is buying out a contract with no repercussions, then it's just a matter of making the money work.

I’m operating under the assumption that when "buying out’ his deal they’re not on the hook for the entire value of the contract but only a small portion of it. But yeah, it would make things tricky…you’d have to potentially sell it to him as a choice: if you want to stay in TB, this is how it’s gotta be. Otherwise, if we sign you for more money, we’re back where we started and you’re likely never getting back to a Cup, Vinny.

What I took from the question was that everything about the buyout process would be the same except that the whole thing would come off the books immediately. Thus, they are on the hook for the entire amount, just over 2x as long as the original contract, only it wouldn’t count against the cap. Thus real dollars matter.

I do wonder, though, how you convince a guy that you really like him and want him to stick around, but you just don’t like him that much. “Yeah Vinny, you’re really good and we really like you, but you’re not that good. So now that we’ve unilaterally gotten rid of that albatross of a contract you signed in good faith, why doncha sign this one?” I’m thinking that might be a hard sell.

Okay, I get it.

Although from what I can tell, when you buyout a contract, it’s not for the full amount…right? Ohlund has around $11-12m left on his contract after this season, but if the Bolts buy him out, they’d only be on the hook for $7.8m over double the remaining length of the deal (8 years). So there is a slight discount…just not a lot.

And yeah, that’s not nearly enough of a different for the Bolts to buyout Vinny and then plausibly resign him. So scratch that off.

Going with the possibility of buying out a contract

It can be done in such a way that the player benefits

The Sens once bought out Alfredsson’s old contract before the current CBA came into effect, but then, that was in order to pay him more money, which doesn’t work for the Lightning, since Lecavalier can hardly be paid more than he is currently making.

You’re right. It’s 2/3 for both Lacavalier and Ohlund.

Right now, I'd buy out Ohlund

if we could save the buyout for 2016 or so and Vinny hadn’t decided to retire, I’d buy him out then. unless I could buy him out earlier and then negotiate a different contract

If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

At least Vinny’s contract isn’t as bad as Luongo’s or DiPietro’s.
