Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina trade speculation stirs
With 11 days until the 2012 NHL trade deadline, a bit of Tampa Bay Lightning related innuendo has come to the surface this morning.
Defenseman Pavel Kubina has been kept off the ice at the morning skate "to protect the team's interests", as has been reported directly by the Tampa Bay Lightning Twitter feed. Sources claim that Kubina has spent time in the Lightning front office the past two days, and now the team confirms (via the above linked tweet) that Kubina has been asked to submit a list of teams he would be willing to accept a trade to. Kubina's two-year contract, signed in the summer of 2010, has a limited no-trade clause.
Tampa Bay Times beat reporter Damian Cristodero says Kubina will not play tonightversus San Jose.
Kubina is a plus-1 this season, seeing additional laying time when the Bolts suffered the loss of Victor Hedman earlier this season. He has 3 goals and 8 assists as well.

Okay, the obvious are Calgary (Feaster) and the NY Rangers (Tortorella) – but the Rangers are good. So…who wants/needs Kubina?

Ottawa would likely be interested
And who knows, he might be interested in reuniting with Filip Kuba. But what would the asking price to be? I’m not sure the Sens are able to enter into a bidding war for him.

Anyone else hearing the "jaws" theme in their head?
Kubina’s on a lot of media-made lists. He’s even been on some Preds bloggers’ lists (please, no, Mr Poile.)

Definitely our best player to trade
in that a run of good form might actually make him desirable, but his age means he’s not in our long-term plans.
I have no idea where he’s going though
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

I’m sure that since Yzerman asked for a list of teams that he’s had a few GMs approach him. Otherwise, if a single team were interested in Kubina, then he’d have asked about waiving his no-trade clause for a specific team. I’m just wondering who’s offering what.

One thing this means
I take this as clear a signal as any that the Bolts are officially sellers.
Apparently JM has been reading up on RC about his team’s chances of post-season play. Howdy, Steve! :-)

both papers ran stories today with Mr. Yzerman admitting that he’s looking to the future for the team as well. Time for the boys to become spoilers and ruin some other team’s playoff chances!

I know his name has been floated around up here in Chicago as a possible target. Possible return being a draft pick (2nd or 3rd) and a mid-range prospect.

I’m listening to Seattle radio sports show about the possible new sports arena right now. There’s a press conference at city hall at 5 pm ET about it. It’s looking promising so far, but it’s not a sure thing.

Well, so far, they’re saying that Hansen’s group doesn’t have all the money. But they’re planning on raising it themselves. He’s interested in buying an NBA team, and realizes that they’ll also need an NHL team to help pay for the arena, but he’s not sure if they want to be the full owner of an NHL team.
The timeline seems to be speedy – they’re supposed to be meeting with the NBA BoG in April about a team.

Therein lies the rub with me. They claim to want private funding for the rest—but who’s done that successfully in recent history? The fallback will be public funding…and Rick Santorum has a better chance of being elected mayor of Seattle than does public funding of another stadium. :-)

Chicago has the most obvious need
A top 4 to pair with Hjalmarsson would let the move Jeddy to the 3rd pairing. Rangers, Canucks, Flyers and Leafs would all have to send Salary back the other way. St. Louis could be a dark horse.

That said, I would love to see some of my Blues come down here and join Brew-bot in the Bolts organization!

Agreed. It’s more that the return could be part of the solution than that Kubina’s damaging the team worse than anyone else. Although to be honest, the whole defense is POTP.

But he’s also not the solution. He’s not a long term cog for the building of the team. If the Bolts have no intention of re-signing him, why do you retain him if people are calling at the Trade Deadline?

I understand that if they have no plans on resigning him, than let him go and give him a shot at the cup.
But even at 35 he’s still got some good hockey left in him, I see no reason to not resign him.
It’s actually funny that I am sticking up for the guy, I absolutely hated him when he first got here. And it irritated me every time I heard Esposito talk about how Kubina was one of his best picks ever. But he was young and through the years he became a very reliable player. He grew on me, and now I hate to see him leave, again. I honestly don’t think he wants to leave, he tried to stay before he went to Toronto, but it’s a business.
"Put a jersey on!!!" Warren Sapp
the question is how much good hockey does he have left?
I don’t think it’s just a whole lot

Yzerman doing what's best for the organization
We still lack depth at center and in high end defensive prospects. I think his timing was good as well. Several teams on the slide need help to stay among the playoff bound teams.
