A little glimpse into how we roll here at Raw Charge
So I went down to listen to Mr. Yzerman and wanted to relay that info to my editor. However, I was in a part of the buidling where my phone doesn’t work.
What to do, what to do?
I called my friend Donna, who John doesn’t know, from a land line downstairs at the Forum.
“Donna, please send a text to John at XXX-XXXX, who you don’t know, and tell him yes, I am at the Yzerman conference and also, tonight, Brewer wears the A. He’ll know what that means.”
“Wait, is that code? Is this some kind of international spy stuff, Clark?”
“…”
“Well…?”
“Yes. Yes it is.”

It wasn’t so much that Yzerman wasn’t enamored with Downie. Downie has shown he has the chops to play with the big boys like Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos — with whom he is exceedingly tight — but still has the power to annoy opponents. But Downie has arbitration rights as a restricted free agent and so did Quincey. These moves give Yzerman significant flexibility moving forward as he has a number of holes to fill in his lineup most notably finding a No. 1 goaltender.

WOW!
I see the beginning of a plan coming together for Yzerman. There are two very solid goaltending prospects that should be available toward the end of the 1st round. If Yzerman is to trade for a goalie that’s ready to take on a starting role, he’ll have to give up a high level goalie prospect or a pick capable of supplying one amongst other assets. I love Downs but I think with the speedy more skilled forwards that would be competing for a spot next year, he would end up being on the 3rd line anyway.

I know this is a bit late, but if you want goaltending prospects, the Avs have 5 good ones practically ready to go (Desjardins/Pickard/Aittokallio/Millan/Patterson). I’m not sure why none of them were included in the trade.

Yeah, he’s going to be good. Pickard has a ton of potential as well – he just set the WHL record for most saves in a career.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see what the Avs do with all of them this summer. Aittokallio, Patterson, and Millan’s rights all expire this year, and Desjardins is a RFA. They all look very promising, but with Giguere and Varlamov both still signed next year, we don’t have room for all the prospects.

I can't believe Yzerman completely forgot my Finnish goalie prospect while he had y'all on the phone.
I love the kid. I’ve had him on my wish list for a few months. Y’all get a full-time goalie coach and you’ll set for years if you can hang onto Varly and Sami. I think that if Aittokallio could get onto an SEL team for two years that’d be the best benefit right now, but I’m gonna be keeping an eye on him wherever he ends up.

On what the stockpile of draft picks gives the Lightning…
“…Draft related or potentially trade related to acquire players, we have some flexibility. We can hang on to some of those picks and still if theres a move that comes up, if a team is looking to move a player, there’s a lot of options for us. And we get to the draft, we can move up, move down, do a lot of different things. So we’re excited about the future. Today obviously, i think maybe we took one step backward today. We traded players off our roster for draft picks but I think it puts us ahead in the long run.”

Stamkos, raising his level of play to make up for V4 being out
Anybody this this guy doesn’t deserve the “C”. Defenders have to literally be inside his equipment to stop him. Hooked, slashed, dragged down and still getting quality chances. Huge period by Brewer and Hedman. It’s refreshing to see so many players raising their games to playoff level to make up for their injured or departed teammates. I really like Trevor Smith.

As someone who played Hockey for many years
As well as coached and even refereed ( is that a word? ) I can tell you that Stamkos is the leader in that room now. I’m not trying to marginalize V4 or MSL but Stammer and Purcell are what we need to look to for the future, I love Marty to death but he’s on a pace for only 20 goals. Vinny is just not the type to be vocal and out front as the face of the team. With Yzerman’s recent dealings it’s clear that this teams is turning the page on the past and moving forward. I’m not saying Stamkos immediately gets the “C”, just that he deserves it.

I'd say B+
he got about market value for Moore and Kubina, which was worth it given that they were UFAs. You need more than market value to get an A.
I’m not on the “wow, he turned Downie into a 1st round pick??? AMAZING!” bandwagon (after all, it’s a very late first-rounder), but a first-rounder for a streaky player up for arbitration certainly isn’t a bad deal.
obviously, if you manage the draft well, that grade can rise. if you manage it poorly, the grade can drop

Okay, I'm the last one here, let me turn out the lights.
Steven Stamkos remains a monster and now is on a point-per-game pace for his career. The Bolts give the Ducks their first regulation loss of their extended road trip and win themselves their 4th game in their past sixth.
The team now heads out on the road for a three game road swing… First is Winterpeg and the former-Thrashers. Next is Pittsburgh and then New Jersey before closing the month out at home against Les Habs.
3-2 the final from Times Palace. Good night all.
