The Admirals continued their monster streak with another hard fought win over a desperate team. The Springfield Falcons are fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot of their own while the Ads are busy securing the conference. The game started off with the ice tilted in Springfield's favor with them getting a quick few shots off until the Admirals get a power play. The Admirals would get 2 shots off the power play but never really keep pressure on the Falcons. A few minutes later the Falcons head to the power play from a slashing call against newly signed Tampa Bay Lightning forward Cory Conacher, they get 1 shot. Later on there was quite a scare when Savard of the Falcons boards Conacher hard, he goes down and gets up holding his face and left the ice for the rest of the period. Savard would get a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for the play. On the ensuing power play the Admirals have a nice passing exhibition but no real scoring chances until the Ads get a 5 on 3 and Kostka launches a hard shot that trickles behind the Falcons goalie and is put away by Ouellet. The period would wind down with Springfield being really physical and not converting a power play. Admirals lead shots 10 to 7.
Shortly into the second period Dustin Tokarski comes up with a huge save and goes down after the play. The trainer would come out to check on him and he would get up after about a minute stoppage. At the next stoppage Conacher returns to the bench with a rocking welcome back from the 4353 fans in attendance. Soon after Mike Angelidis would get a goal after some sloppy play in the defensive zone. The Falcons step up after the goal putting on pressure then the Ads head down ice, launch one off the crossbar and it falls down onto the goal line and the goalie is quick to cover. The forechecking picks up for the Admirals leading to their third power play of the night. They would get 1 shot and wash out the rest of it. They exchange the man advantage with the Falcons who get no shots on theirs. Fast forward a couple minutes and the penalty filled period continues with the Falcons picking up a double minor for high sticking. The Admirals would score on the first half of the 4 minutes with Ouellet getting his second goal of the night, both on the power play. Norfolk would eventually get a 5 on 3 but could not convert. At the 18:33 mark Picard could score, take a cross check from behind and a scuffle breaks out with the Captain Angelidis going after the offender. Ads end the period out shooting the Falcons 23-12 and 2/7 on the PP.
The Scuffle after the Picard goal led to a 4on 4 being carried over into the third. Tic comes up with another big save, really stepping his game up post all star break. The Falcons would get a breakaway and Radko Gudas hustles down the ice and breaks it up. The Admirals at this point just could not get any offense going, looked like they were trying to turtle to a victory. Falcons end up on the power play and get 2 shots but no goals, but soon after the PP they get a goal on some really tired players. The Admirals did not, by my notes, get a shot in the period until about 5 minutes remaining in the game. They get a PP and don't capitalize on it and the the Falcons score on a power play goal to make it 4-2 with just under 3 minutes remaining. Springfield would eventually pull their goaltender and somehow pick up a penalty behind their own net. Coach Cooper sends out an unconventional forward unit of Neilson, and ECHL call ups Devos and Hutchings, Neilson posts up right in front of the goalie leading to a Devos power play goal.
Admirals finish the game 3 of 9 on the power play and leading shots 27-22. Hutchings was getting good ice time tonight and played well. Tokarski gets his league leading 26th win of the season. The two teams go back at it tomorrow night and the Admirals try to extend to a 12 game win streak.
