In the final expected RFA move of the summer, the Lighting have just announced that they have re-signed defenseman Mark Barberio to a one-year, two-way contract. Barberio is the last player the Lighting extended a qualifying offer to at the beginning of summer to be re-signed.
Barberio was an integral part of AHL Syracuse's leadership system this past season and totaled 42 regular season points in 73 games. He was tied for third in the AHL among defensemen for assists with 34, and ranked sixth in the AHL for points. Five of his eight goals last season were recorded while on the power play. During the Calder Cup playoffs, Barberio racked up 15 points, which led all defensemen. He was was also tied for first in both goals and assists.
The 23 year old defenseman skated in two games with the Tampa Bay Lighting this past season, recording one shot on goal. Although signed to a two-way, many projections have Barberio in Tampa Bay for the 2013-2014 season.
