Victor Hedman and Henrik Zetterberg speak out against Russian Anti Gay laws

USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay's Victor Hedman and Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg, bound to play for Team Sweden in the Winter Olympics in 2014 in Sochi, Russia, spoke out recently against the country's ant-gay laws.

Two Swedish NHL stars have spoken out against Russia's laws banning "homosexual propaganda" ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman, speaking to a publication in his native Sweden, along with Detroit Red Wing's forward Henrik Zetterberg, were critical of Russia's outspoken stances and called equality.

Hedman reportedly would support the Swedish Olympic Committee if it decided to stage a protest. Via Thescore.com

"That's completely wrong, we're all humans. No one should have a say in what way you're sexually oriented," Hedman said in an interview with Aflonbladet's Linues Norberg this week.

Zetterberg's remarks invoked the idea the Olympics are supposed to go beyond stances such as this:

"The Olympics is there for a reason and everyone should be able to participate and be themselves," he said. "Everyone should stand up for homosexual rights."

This is likely only the beginning of what could become a growing  chorus from NHL players who will participate in the Olympics, speaking out on the subject. Some players may opt for self-censorship, like New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist did when reporters asked him about Russia's anti-gay laws.

Regardless, expect more comments and rhetoric issue before the start of the 2014 Winter games.
