Phoenix seeking Southeast Division rival

SB Nation's Phoenix Coyotes blog, Five for Howling, is having a little off-season fun with readership and trying to make a case for a rivalry with a Southeast Division opponent. While yesterday's Radim Vrbata trade was cited as something the Bolts will come to regret in the future... some longer term eccentricities between the Bolts and the Coyotes were neglected... Like Petr Svoboda's career ending injury at the hands of Shane Doan in 2000, or the Nikolai Khabibulin trade in 2001.

Summer Fun: CLS Re-Drafting the NHL

For a little summer fun, the Cycle like the Sedins blog is throwing a Re-Draft, and Raw Charge is the Tampa Bay Lightning GM. Who in the NHL would you like to see "drafted" to the Lightning?

Radim Vrbata traded back to Phoenix For Fedoruk, Hale (Updated)

Radim Vrbata has been dumped from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Phoenix Coyotes for David Hale and Todd Fedoruk.

[A] top-six forward just might turn out to be a real wild card here. It’s conceivable that the right acquisition in this target area could very well take the Bolts from having a nice little off-season to immediately becoming a contender in the Southeast Division next year.

Smaby Deal: "as early as this weekend"

Defensemen Matt Smaby's agent and Lightning GM Brian Lawton are on the same page with contract negotiations - but no deal is imminent. Smaby faces an arbitration hearing next week if a new contract is not signed before then.

Skip on-ice camp, Olympic players advised

"The NHL Players' Association has recommended players skip the on-ice portion of Olympic orientation camps because of insurance concerns." This probably makes the NHL teams with players invited happy, but I'm sure the national teams aren't. What's the point in throwing a hockey camp if no one gets on the ice? Which, I'm sure, the players are also wondering about.

Lightning owner Len Barrie says NHL is "satisfied" with his letter of credit

"For the time being, though, things presumably are status quo in the Lightning front office. Koules is still CEO and governor and, with general manager Brian Lawton, controls most of the day-to-day activity surrounding the team. Barrie still has managerial rights in that he must sign off on all "major" player transactions." Oh good. Things are staying the same. Like that's worked so well for them this past year.

NJ Devils sign defenseman Cory Murphy

I know some have been disappointed to see Cory Murphy shut out of the Lightning's future. He has officially signed with the New Jersey Devils.
