Photo by Jukka Rautio/HHOF-IIHF Images Russia defeats Finland 5-0. Varlamov was spectacular, making 36 saves in the victory. Fedorov, Malkin, Kulemin, Emelin and Afinogenov scored for Russia with Ovechkin and Semin picking up assists on Fedorov's goal. Varlamov was selected as the player of the game for Russia and received a fancy new watch. Russia will now face Canada in the quarterfinal on Thursday. IIHF Recap IIHF Photos

Ovechkin scored his third goal of the World Championships and Varlamov made 19 saves in his first game since the Capitals were eliminated as Russia defeated Belarus in the final game of the preliminary round. Russia will face Germany next. Photographs Stat Sheet

Canada has to pick up the pieces after being schooled 4-1 by Switzerland Wednesday. Steven Stamkos left the game early but many of his teammates joined him in spirit.
