The case against Frantz Jean

Frantz Jean has yet to get more than a barely adequate performance out of the netminders he has worked with over the past three seasons. And "barely adequate" ought not be acceptable.

Quick Strikes for Monday, October 1st

The 2012 NHL lockout drones on but there are stories to behold: Krys Barch speaks from the heart; Daryl Katz apologizes for blackmailing Edmonton; lockout or no, some players on the Lightning are still getting paid.

Allaire: Scott Gordon's 'disastrous' teaching

Francois Allaire's continuing venting about the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching staff shows how professional relationships can turn ugly in a hurry on losing teams.

Why Roberto Luongo wouldn't be a disaster for the Lightning

It might make hockey sense for the Tampa Bay Lightning to look very closely at Roberto Luongo.

"When we started the season last year, the organization was basically empty," Allaire said. "We had one goalie who couldn’t play in the NHL anymore [Toskala], one goalie with no experience [Jonas Gustavsson] and one goalie who was coming out of the ECHL [Reimer].

Too bad no one told Brian Burke!

THN: Giguere and the Goalie Guru

The Hockey News has a three minute video on Giguere working with Allaire. There's some Brayden Irwin footage and Jonas Gustavsson discussion.

Part of the allure of Toronto for Rynnas was Leafs goaltending coach Francois Allaire, somewhat of a rock star among the netminding community. "It’s a good situation with a three-year contract," said Roy. "He’ll get to work with a goalie coach who loves working with goalies who play his style."

Kevin McGran and Jussi Rynnäs' agent muddle the contract issue some more. Yesterday, PRC and GarrettBauman indicated that their reading of the CBA meant that the longest the deal could be under the Entry Level Contract system is two years. A reading of the NHL's CBA section 9.1 seems to confirm that two years is the longest deal possible.

"Vesa is not a guy who likes to build relations with coaches. He preferred to be by himself," said Allaire. "To do that, to say, `I'm okay by myself, I know what to do,' you have to be really good in this league in 2010."

Where is Andy Wozniwski when you need him? Are you shitting me?!

Toskala learning all over again

Elliotte Friedman blogs about Toskala. Includes some interview stuff with both Toskala and Allaire.

Francois Allaire Rocks

"François has two basic elements to his system," said Burke, who refers to Allaire as being – simply – the best. "It’s a battery of drills that do two things: make a goalie position conscious at all times, so they never lose their net. It also incorporates a high-level of work, so your goaltenders are in shape. "His theory is that the butterfly goalie does not make saves; he blocks shots. So your job is to get into position to present the most surface area to the shooter and let the puck hit you and then, hopefully, control the rebound." From The Globe and Mail
