Tampa Bay sports attendance and the Tampa Bay Lightning

7

While perception of a down-economy makes one believe all Tampa Bay pro-sports teams are struggling to sell tickets and grab fan interest, it's the contrary for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Record columnist Alfred Doblin has returned with another poorly-argued column. Don't bother clicking on the link, as he's just rehashing the same misconceptions from two months ago. Doblin doesn't care at all at all about how the athletic department is funded. In fact, his argument is self-refuting. He cites a recent Zoffinger quote about an athletic department subsidy. Well, here' a novel notion: you can actually use this thing called the internet to research the size of the total athletic department budget. If a certain percentage of the total athletics budget is subsidized by the university, and Rutgers only receivers an increasingly small percentage of state support for the broader university budget, it's downright disingenuous to compare athletic department expenses to a 100% public position. There's also the matter that football isn't the only scholarship sport at the university. That's exactly how I have argued with Doblin, with links to the requisite citations, and his response has been to hand waive and Think Of The Children (tm). Again, Doblin only cares about looking for scapegoats for the F.Y. 2011 budget cuts. Gov. Christie would do well to cast off a sycophant who produces such drivel. To those looking for constructive solutions for making the athletic department more self-sustainable, spouting the same old tired misconceptions is not even remotely helpful. Don't waste any more breath or energy acknowledging Doblin. The best possible response is to just be concerned with actual matters of fact, and engage in a candid, open debate without preconceptions about the best way forward for Rutgers and its sports programs.
