2013 AHL Playoffs: Calder Cup Finals to be streamed for free on AHL Live

The American Hockey League doesn’t have the luxury of a national television contract with a major conglomerate media entity, or any national media entity for that matter, so having its product (AHL games) broadcast to the masses isn’t something that normally happens.

Last year, the league lucked out and had three of four Calder Cup games broadcast on CBS Sports Network (which some people get and fewer people know how to find on their cable box). This year? Nothing, not at the moment.

But that doesn’t mean the AHL is going to keep its product away from the audience of potential viewers. It was announced Thursday afternoon that AHL live will broadcast the Calder Cup series between the Syracuse Crunch and Grand Rapids Griffins for free.

It’s not outright, straightforward, just-surf-to-a-website-and-watch. You do need to sign up for AHL Live first and select the Calder Cup package, using the promotional code “Calder2013”. That’s a hell of a lot better than being in the dark and watching Twitter for news on the game, though.

You can read the full press release from the AHL here. The Calder Cup Finals start on Saturday at 7 PM EDT.
