2013 NHL Trade Deadline: Tampa Bay Lightning acquire goaltender Ben Bishop from Ottawa for LW Cory Conacher

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired another goalie, but it’s not the Buffalo Sabres Ryan Miller who was speculated upon a few days ago. Instead it’s the Ottawa Senator’s mammoth goaltender Ben Bishop, who Tampa Bay inquired about last year before he was traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Ottawa Senators. The cost last year was to be a 2nd round draft choice. The return this year is a 4th round draft choice and….

Rookie of the year candidate Cory Conacher.

Be careful what you wish for, Lightning fans who had been asking for Bishop during the past few months. You’ve gotten him at a heft, hefty price.

Bishop, 26 with a .922 save percentage and 2.45 GAA in 13 games for Ottawa, became expendable with the Ottawa Senators with strong play by Craig Anderson and stronger play by backup Robin Lehner.

Meanwhile… Well, you know the situation in Tampa Bay. Goalies are an issue. Goalies have been an issue. Goalies will be an issue, it seems, for a while yet until proven otherwise.

As for losing Cory Conacher in this deal, I’m personally devastated. It explains why Conacher’s name was not floated in “paper” roster moves today to make him playoff eligible for the Syracuse Crunch’s 2013 AHL playoffs.
