Wednesday night, I was on Twitter going over various ramblings and remarks by people, news reports, Twitter memes, etc... A tweet by Christina Muniz (@tidus_37), a Lightning fan in the Carolinas, caught my attention:
HEY BOLTS FANS: The Lightning will be playing in their away jerseys on Sunday vs the Canes. Canes will be in black jerseys at the Forum.— Christina Muniz (@tidus_37) April 18, 2013
I was skeptical about this; The Hurricanes might be wearing their Alts on Sunday, but the Lightning wearing their road whites at home What about their own third jerseys? I mean, black (the Hurricanes uniforms) versus blue wouldn't be all that confusing, though it would be odd.
I hadn't heard anything about this, plan previously, or if the Bolts would indeed be in white or their third uniform. So, Wednesday night I emailed Trevor van Knotsenburg, PR Coordinator with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and he confirmed to me the Lightning are scheduled to wear their road (white) uniform at the Forum on Sunday.
The question that may jump to your mind is, why? I can't answer that, as I don't know. Trevor was not aware of the reason why either, and had not found out why by the time of this writing. The significance of this game (being the last time the Lightning play the Hurricanes as divisional foes) wasn't present when the Hurricanes announced their schedule of alternate jersey dates. And this game has been scheduled to have them wear their alts for a while now.
Correct me I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time the Lightning have worn white at home since the 2002-03 season.
[Note by John Fontana, 04/20/13 12:10 PM EDT ] And I have been corrected: February 17th, 2009 saw the Lightning wear white at home during a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Hat tip to userpython815 for emailing me and pointing it out.
For the traditionalists out there, this is a gift game to you - home team, wearing white . For general fans? Try not to be confused.
