2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 2, Game 5: Bolts shut out Isles 4-0, move on to Eastern Conference Finals

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Islanders 4-0 to close out their playoff series four games to one and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second consecutive season.

The Lightning came out strong, obviously determined to finish off the Islanders without returning to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. That’s exactly what they did, getting two goals from Victor Hedman and 28 saves from Ben Bishop.

There was a very early “uh-oh” moment as Cedric Paquette was whistled for High Sticking just ten seconds in. The Bolts were able to weather that challenge and the assault began.

The opening goal, and eventual game winner came at 13:49 when Hedman scored his first of two goals, unassisted but aided by Tyler Johnson screening Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss.

They would go on to get goals from Brian Boyle and Nikita Kucherov in addition to Hedman’s second.

The Lightning will now wait to play either the Washington Capitals or the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Pittsburgh currently holding a 3-2 edge in that series.

Game notes:

  • Kucherov regained the league lead in playoff goals with his ninth.
  • The Lightning are 7-9 all time in Game 5’s, with a record of 5-4 in Game 5’s played at home.
  • The Lightning have never lost a playoff series in which they held a 3-1 series lead.
  • The Islanders John Tavares was held scoreless in the last four games of the series.
  • The Lightning honored Jim and Celia Ferman as the 47th Lightning Community Heroes of the 2015-16 season during the first period of today’s game. The Ferman’s, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to the University of Tampa, Meals on Wheels, Moffitt Cancer Center and Florida Aquarium. Since moving to Tampa in the 1880s, the Ferman family has been fully committed to giving back to Tampa Bay residents and Jim and Celia are no different. Jim has been at the center of advocacy as chairman of the United Way Hillsborough County and as director of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. His civic duties granted him the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Gulf Ridge Council Boy Scouts of America and the Florida Family Business Award from UT’s Sykes College of Business. Furthermore, Celia has also been at the nucleus of community affairs as a member of Meals on Wheels for the past 30 years. Also, she served as chair of the Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation’s Board of Directors where she provided tremendous influence on cancer research nationwide. The Ferman family will extend their persistent efforts for years to come as they have made an influential impact to countless individuals in need. Jim and Celia become the 226th Lightning Community Heroes since Jeff and Penny Vinik introduced the program in 2011-12 with a $10 million, five-season commitment to the Tampa Bay community. Through this evening’s game, in total, the Lightning Foundation has granted $11.45 million to more than 300 different non-profits in the Greater Tampa Bay area./
