Quick Strikes: Maple Leafs prospect scores Nikita Kucherov-style shootout goal

Braden Holtby couldn’t sleep all night last night.

2018 Honda NHL All-Star Game - Atlantic v Metropolitan
TAMPA, FL - JANUARY 28: Nikita Kucherov #86 of the Tampa Bay Lightning scores on Braden Holtby #70 of the Washington Capitals during the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Game between the Atlantic Division and the Metropolitan Divison at Amalie Arena on January 28, 2018 in Tampa, Florida.

The Bolts

The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the track to history. Here are some of the things that they are on pace of breaking, along with various other things around the league. [NHL dot com]

The Tampa Bay Lightning (52-13-4) have a 15-point lead over the Boston Bruins for first place in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division. They need 10 wins in their final 13 games to tie the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings for most victories (62) in one season. With 108 points through 69 games, they would need to go 12-0-1 to break the 1976-77 Canadiens record of 132 points in a season.

The Lightning are sled hockey champions!!!!

They say imitation is the great form of flattery, right? Great goal, Dmytro Timashov!

Upper Deck has a new 2018-19 Game Used edition of trading cards. JustinG. goes into depth on the subject, sharing some really interesting facts along the way. Always love these articles. [Raw Charge]

Therein lies the rub of buying boxes like this. If you’re looking to turn a profit or get value out of it, that premium hit better be of someone like Connor McDavid instead of Mikael Granlund or else you’re better off just setting your money on fire. Of course, we’re not here to flip cards on eBay, we’re here to collect Lightning cards. So whose cards can you find in a box of SP Game Used?

I’m sorry that I’m just sharing my own tweets in the QS, but literally nothing happened yesterday in Boltsville. The team having the day off and flying into Toronto last night is all the real scoops I got.

The Prospects

Ross Colton scored twice, but it wasn’t enough for the Syracuse Crunch to beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Crunch lose 4-3 in overtime. [Raw Charge]

It was an entertaining and weird game. The Crunch absolutely dominated the first period, scoring twice and outshooting the Penguins 17-5. The second period they had the better play for the most part, but it was a more even game. The third period was an uneven, penalty-filled nightmare in which the Crunch gave up two power play goals. Overtime was a crapshoot as always, with the Penguins capitalizing on a deflected shot.

The Orlando Solar Bears beat the Newfoundland Growlers in a shootout last night. Here’s the shootout goal by Troy Bourke and save previous to that by Connor Ingram, who was the third star. [Bolt Prospects]

Impressive. A week after taking two of three games from South Division-leading Florida, the Solar Bears went to Newfoundland and took two of three against the North Division-leading Growlers. Connor Ingram, demoted to the ECHL from AHL Syracuse due to an “internal matter,” bounced back from Friday’s 5-1 loss with a 4-2 win Saturday and 4-3 shootout win Sunday. He’ll sleep well on the plane home after all that work.

The Game

Malcolm Subban went full “U wot m8?” to the referee. Shame he got a penalty for it because it was hilarious.

Two goals in two games for the prospect traded by the Maple Leafs in the Jake Muzzin deal. Go on, Carl Grundstrom!

The Anaheim Calling Twitter account sure is having fun with these tank GIFs.

Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel has been suspended two games for his headshot on Colorado’s Carl Soderberg. [Die by the Blade]

The suspension falls in line with the precedent that was set a few weeks ago when Connor McDavid put a similar hit on New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy and was also suspended for two games.

Vancouver’s top defensive prospect Quinn Hughes has been called up from the NCAA following his team’s departure from the final tournament.

Highlight of the Night: Goalie dekes!
