2020 Lightning NHL Draft Profile: Eamon Powell selected at 116

With the 116th pick, acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Flyers, the Tampa Bay Lightning selected defenseman Eamon Powell from the US National Team Development Program. Powell is a right-shot defender with great skating ability and a good hockey IQ. He is a good all-around, two-way defenseman with puck-carrying offensive upside, and a good positional defensive game.

Powell will be heading to Boston College this season, whenever it starts, and should be a big part of their rebuilding program.

Scouting Reports

“One of the lesser talked about defenders in the 2020 draft, Powell put together a quietly good season with the U.S. National Team Development Program. He isn’t a flashy player but he does a lot very well and doesn’t have any glaring holes in his game. He is a smart puck mover who makes good, crisp passes out of his zone and has the skating ability to evade pressure in order to do so. He lacks high-level top-speed which can hurt him in puck races but he often anticipates the play well enough that he can get a step or two on the attacker. He possesses a big shot that he likes to use from the right faceoff dot, beating netminders more often than a player with limited upside and a slightly undersized frame would be expected to. He will be playing at Boston College next season, a great place for a defender to develop and grow into his game.” – Dobber Prospects, Tony Ferrari

“This time the focus shifts to the US National Team Development Program which has produced a slew of top-tier defencemen in recent drafts. This year appears to be no different with Jake Sanderson looking like a clear cut top 15 pick and Brock Faber potentially going in the 2nd round. Tyler Kleven is another defender garnering high round interest but the player that has caught my eye is 5’11”, right shot rear guard, Eamon Powell.” – Canucks Army, Wyatt Kaiser

“Right-handed Defenders are scattered throughout, but definitely bunched up towards the first round…or the second to fourth round. Part of this is that for as good as these RHD’s are, the LHDs are way easier to come by and usually fill out more spots for competition. Another is that, for as good as they could be, the RHDs that are projected for the first round cast a very long shadow: Jamie Drysdale is the completed modern day 2-way defender, Braden Schneider was a 42-point getting big man defender in the WHL, Helge Grans is 6’3, skates like a forward and passes like a video game, and Justin Barron had a freaking blood clot to start the year that affected his ability to contribute in the QMJHL and still might be a first round pick despite that.” – Stanley Cup of Chowder

A lot of people like Powell and see his upside coming to the fore as he gets older. This could be a really great swing, and for a pick they traded back to get.
