The Tampa Bay Lightning launched 187 shots toward the Columbus Blue Jackets’ net on Tuesday. Some went wide, many were blocked, and Joonas Korpisalo stopped a league-record 87 of them. However, the 187th shot that managed to elude him and give the Lightning the win in the fifth overtime.
Just prior to Brayden Point’s goal the Lightning had a power play. It did not go well. They didn’t generate any shots and more than a few passes missed their mark. It’s no surprise, seeing how they had played the equivalent of almost three games.
For most of the night, the Lightning were trying to shoot through an impenetrable wall of Columbus players. Much like we expected, they did their best to block as many shots as they good.
In the end, it was a blocked shot that set up the game-winning goal.
Nikita Kucherov flung a shot in the general direction of the net and it hit defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov up high. The rebound game straight to Point. He wasted no time in whipping the shot on net and it beat Korpisalo up high.
