This doesn’t just surprise me, ti boggles my mind a bit.  McElhinney is an unrestricted free agent after the season with a 6-9-1 record this season.  He’s got a 3.43 GAA and a .890 save percentage…

That save percentage is equal to Dan Ellis’ own save percentage.  While Ellis has a 2.93 GAA.

This amounts to shuffling deck chairs.  And it leaves me scratching my head.  Does this mean the Lightning have another deal int eh works and needed the extra money?  As Chad Schnarr asked on Twitter, is this a precursor to something bigger?  Or is it simply the belief by the team that Curtis’ has better potential than he’s proven?

Official press release is below the jump.
