Fun with Tampa Bay Lightning jersey numbers: Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller

With Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller joining the Tampa Bay Lightning, that means two new jersey numbers to add to the team.

It’s not clear exactly when these players will make their Lightning debuts after being acquired from the New York Rangers. We haven’t gotten official word on what number Miller will wear, but we know what number McDonagh will wear (his number cleared in time for the gentleman below to buy his jersey at the team shop yesterday afternoon). Assuming I can guess which number Miller will wear, we might as well look at some Lightning history with their numbers.

#27 Ryan McDonagh

Since joining the New York Rangers, McDonagh has only worn #27. McDonagh wore #17 with the University of Wisconsin in the NCAA and the Connecticut Whale in the AHL. That’s taken by Alex Killorn, so McDonagh will continue with #27 for the Lightning. Also of note is that he wore #54 when he played with Barys Astana during the 2012-13 lockout. Oh, by the way, guess who else was on that Barys Astana team? One Victor Hedman.

With McDonagh taking #27, he’ll be the 14th player to wear the number, Jonathan Drouin being the most recent. The other Lightning players to wear the number were Stan Drulia, Alexander Semak, David Shaw, Jason Wiemer, Brent Peterson, Colin Forbes, Jassen Cullimore, Steve Martins, Sheldon Keefe, Tim Taylor, Brandon Bochenski (who also played on that 2012-13 Barys Astana team), and Bruno Gervais.

Tim Taylor was the longest serving #27 for the Lightning with 365 game played. Jonathan Drouin owns the most points wearing #27 with 95 points.

#10 J.T. Miller

J.T. Miller entered the league with the Rangers in 2012-13 wearing #47, but the following season he switched to #10 and has worn it in the NHL since then. Miller has worn other numbers prior to his NHL career. In the OHL with the Plymouth Whalers, he wore #12. In the AHL with the Connecticut Whale, he wore #20. He switched to #10 when the Rangers’ AHL affiliate changed to the Hartford Wold Pack the same year he took #10 when he played in the NHL for the Rangers. In addition, he wore #10 for Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey.

It seems like it’s a pretty easy decision for him to stick with #10 as it’s available with the Lightning. He would become the 11th player in franchise history to wear #10 with Mike Angelidis being the last in the 2015-16 season. Other players to wear the number are Adam Creighton, Paul Brousseau, Sandy McCarthy, Mike Johnson, John Emmons, Jussi Jokinen, Gary Roberts, Sean Bergenheim, and Brendan Morrow.

Adam Creighton from the inaugural Lightning team has the most games played and points at 136 games and 59 points for the Lightning while wearing #10.
