Game 21: Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins

The Tampa Bay Lightning lost to the Boston Bruins 3-2.

This game started out well. The Lightning were playing well defensively, backchecking everywhere, and kept Boston down to seven shots on the period. And they were able to capitalize on a couple of breakdowns during the power play to end the period up 2-0 on goals by Steven Stamkos and Alex Killorn – both goals were set up by Teddy Purcell, by the way.

The second period, wasn’t bad. But then, it wasn’t exactly good, either. They’d started getting away from the defensive play they’d been doing in the first, and Boston tied up the game. They weren’t awful by any means, but had they been playing like they did in the first period, they might have come out of the second still ahead.

The third was more of the same, with some defensive lapses and allowing Boston more shots. In the end, it was three players jumping in on a short-handed rush where the shot didn’t end up on net that got them. Boston was able to turn it around and get a two-on-one the other way and score on the power play.

When the Lightning had pulled goalie Mathieu Garon for the last minute-30 or so, they were unable to keep the puck in the zone, even on the six-on-five. They did also managed to keep the puck out of the empty net. But even still, it’s hard to get a shot off when you don’t have the puck in the offensive zone.

The rookie Killorn had another strong game. It was almost a home game for him, as he had played for Harvard just least year, which is in Boston. He was trying his best to carry the team on his back, particularly towards the end of the game, but it just didn’t happen for him. Even still, imagine what kind of an NHL player he’ll be once he gets another NHL season or two under his belt.

The next Lightning game is on Monday, 4 March. They will be visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins, and game time is 7:30 pm ET. The Raw Charge game thread will be available at 7 o’clock, so stop by and help keep us company.
