Quick Strikes: Mikhail Sergachev stays with the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Bolts

Bryan Burns got to break this news for the organization: Sergachev sticks with the Lightning. “Sergachev made what could have been a fairly difficult decision for the Lightning a rather simple one with his play to start the year. After growing into the NHL game over his first handful of games, Sergachev has exploded offensively of late, recording three-consecutive multi-point games.” [Lightning]

And here’s the Tampa Bay Times piece on it. Cooper: Rookie Sergachev is staying with Lightning — “I’m so happy to be here, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to stay for the whole year,” Sergachev said. “So I’m just thinking about the next game every time. It’s a new day for me. I have to improve every day, have to learn.” [Tampa Bay Times]

Steve wrote a good column about all of the tallies Bolts are reaching so far this season. Lightning Players Litter Top Of NHL Leaderboard: “Mikhail Sergachev, acquired for Jonathan Drouin, is tied for second among all rookies with 8 points (3-5–8) trailing only Will Butcher (NYJ) who has 9.  Drouin has just 5 points (2-3–5) for the Canadiens, a total that leads the team.” [Sports Talk Florida]

Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Carolina Hurricanes last night, 5-1, in a game that was actually pretty close until the last few minutes. “The rookie, in his 10th game, now has twice as many goals and as many assists as Jonathan Drouin, who leads the Montreal Canadiens in finishes and apples.” [Raw Charge]

People who don’t normally talk about hockey are weighing in about JT Brown. Too Far: Nothing fake about J.T. Brown — “In other words, Brown is a doer. He understands that a heck of a lot more people from both sides of this issue will respond to the use of honey (unity) rather than the big dose of vinegar of shallow vitriol that has dominated the issue.” [Public Opinion Online]

The Prospects/Crunch

Someone asked, Why are we covering the Adirondack Thunder? It’s because they are the “unofficial” affiliate of our team, after we ended the contract with the Kalamazoo Wings. We’re lucky enough to have an Adirondack fan, Trace1114, report on the doings of the team, and she’s back with her latest column. [Raw Charge]

Syracuse Crunch’s new War Memorial scoreboard will be delayed into 2018. “The current scoreboard has been broken since last year and Onondaga County has pledged funds for a new one to go along with upgraded building marquees and video systems. The initial hope was that those improvements would have been ready for opening night earlier this month.” [Syracuse.com]

The Game

I guess we’ll be seeing Antti Niemi again, maybe. Panthers claim goaltender Antti Niemi off waivers: “Niemi was claimed on Tuesday, a day after being waived by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He allowed 16 goals in losing three games for the Penguins. Niemi is now on his third team in four months and fourth since winning the 2010 Stanley Cup with Chicago.” [Sportsnet]

The City

Rays president says team will evaluate Ybor option. “The Tampa Bay Rays’ President says the team has not made any decisions on possible locations for a new stadium, but will evaluate the Ybor City site identified by Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan.” [Fox 13]

And here’s the news from our sister site, Drays Bay: Rays Stadium Search: Hillsborough County leaks Ybor location for Rays Stadium bid. “As reported by WFLA Channel 8, the site borders Adamo Drive to the south, with its east and west boundaries at 15th Street and Channelside Drive, respectively. It is truly at the intersection of Ybor and the Channel District.” [Drays Bay]
