Solar Bears Week in Review: No bones about it

The Orlando Solar Bears finished the month of October on a high note: a three game winning streak, including a weekend sweep of the Florida Everblades.  Combine that with  sweet Halloween jerseys, and they definitely are headed for treats, not tricks.

Friday, 10/26: Orlando 3, Florida 0

A home-and-home series began on Friday night at Amway Center, as the Solar Bears celebrated Halloween early by taking on the Everblades for the first time this season.

By “celebrating Halloween early,” here’s what we mean: Skeleton jerseys that are rather…impressive.

The jerseys were auctioned off to fans, with all proceeds going to the Jewett Foundation.

The Everblades may have outshot Orlando 12-9 in the opening period, but it would be the Skeletons getting a pair of goals.  In a span of 2:29, Brent Pedersen (2nd) and Brady Shaw (3rd) each scored for a 2-0 Orlando lead.

After a quiet second period, Florida attempted to get on the scoresheet in the third, outshooting the Solar Bears 12-4.  But goaltender Martin Ouellette was up for the challenge, stopping all 12 shots.  Michael Brodzinski added an empty netter with 1:34 remaining to seal the win.

Ouellette picked up his first shutout of the season against his former mates, stopping all 28 Everblade shots.  Mitch Hults made his Solar Bears debut, picking up one assist.

3 Stars:

3. Brady Shaw (ORL) 1 goal

2. Brent Pedersen (ORL) 1 goal

1. Martin Ouellette (ORL) 28 saves

Saturday, 10/27: Orlando 5, Florida 4 (OT)

The two teams headed south to Estero on Saturday to finish off the home and home series.

The teams traded goals in the opening period.  John McCarron got the Everblades on the board five minutes into the contest with his second goal.  Brodzinski tied the game up at 1 with his second goal in as many days.

The Solar Bears took a 2-1 lead 3:54 into the second as forward Dylan Fitze scored his first of the season.  That lead lasted just 76 seconds, as Zach Nastasiuk scored on Ouellette for a 2-2 contest.  The Everblades then added two more goals, from Justin Auger and Tommy Thompson, to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.

Orlando mounted a comeback in the third.  Trevor Olson got the Solar Bears back to within a goal at the 4:59 mark with his first of the season.  Then, while shorthanded, Hunter Fejes scored his sixth of the season with 8:56 to go in regulation to tie the game up at 4.

It was on to overtime for the first time this season for Orlando. Fejes finished the night on a good note, scoring his second of the night 58 seconds into the extra session to finish off the comeback win, the third in a row for the Solar Bears.

Ouellette finished with 19 saves on 23 Everblade shots.  Fejes completed a three point night with an assist in the first period.

3 Stars:

3. Dylan Fitze (ORL)—1 goal, 1 assist

2. Justin Auger (FLA)—1 goal, 1 assist
