Pavel Kubina traded by Tampa Bay Lightning to Philadelphia Flyers

This is a breaking news via Twitter and per various media sources. The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defenseman Pavel Kubina. to the Philadelphia Flyers for two draft picks. The deal is pending league approval with thanks to the Flyers being over the contract limit (per Spector's Hockey).

[Note by John Fontana, 02/18/12 10:33 PM EST ]The Lightning have now announced the trade officially via Twitter: Pavel Kubina has been traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for LW Jon Kalinski, a 2nd round draft selection in 2012 or 2013, and a 4th round draft selection in 2013.

The draft selections are reportedly a (conditional) 2nd round pick and a 5th round pick 4th round draft choice in 2013 per ESPN's Pierre Lebrun. This would give the Lightning 5 picks in the first two rounds. On Thursday, the Lightning picked up an additional 2nd round draft choice from the San Jose Sharks (via the Minnesota Wild) in a deal that sent Dominic Moore to San Jose. The other extra 2012 2nd round draft choice from the Flyers came in exchange of Andrej Meszaros in the summer of 2010.

The draft selection Philadelphia is sending the Lightning in the Kubina trade is Florida's 2nd round pick, which is a conditional selection that will be in either the 2012 or 2013 NHL draft. It was obtained by the Flyers in the Kris Versteeg trade. (h/t Chad Schnarr at Bolt Prospects)

Pavel Kubina had been asked to specify five teams that he would willingly waive his No Trade Clause for, this news broke on Thursday morning. Kubina, nor his agent Petr Svoboda, had provided that list to the Lightning as of sometime early yesterday evening, but the Kubina camp had plans to iron things out on Saturday.

Kubina is in the last year of a two-year contract he signed in the summer of 2010. he will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and turns 35 years old on April 15th. He is plus-1 with 11 points and 59 penalty minutes in 52 games this season.

D Pavel Kubina Sent to Flyers

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired Florida’s second-round pick in either 2012 or 2013 (previously acquired, Florida’s choice), a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and left wing Jon Kalinski from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenseman Pavel Kubina, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced. Kalinski will be assigned to Norfolk of the American Hockey League.

The Lightning now have a possibility of four selections in the second round of the 2012 draft after acquiring Minnesota’s second-round pick from San Jose in exchange for Dominic Moore and a seventh-round pick on Thursday. They also acquired Philadelphia’s second-round draft choice on July 1, 2010 in exchange for defenseman Andrej Meszaros. They would have a minimum of three picks in the second.

Kalinski, 6-foot-1, 186 pounds, has played in 40 games with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL this season, recording nine goals and 12 points. He has played in 233 career AHL games with Adirondack and Philadelphia, registering 35 goals and 83 points with 186. Kalinski has also played in 14 career Calder Cup Playoff games, notching two goals and six points. He has played in 22 career NHL games, all with the Flyers, recording a goal and five points.

A native of Bonnyville, Alberta, Kalinski was drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round, 152nd overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
