The Bolts

After a disappointing night all-around from the Tampa Bay Lightning while south of the Big Apple, the team flew to the Big D state and put in a good defensive night — led by Andrei Vasilevskiy’s shut out — for two points on the road against the Dallas Stars. [Raw Charge]

As evidence that the Lightning didn’t like the hit from Faksa, Cooper sent out the top power play unit with a 5-on-3 already up 2-0 with less than two minutes left. Normally, that’s a situation where he would be happy to run out the clock. Instead, he looked to add another goal. And while it didn’t come, it showed how chippy the end of this game was.

“Our goaltender played outstanding,” Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. “We know he’s going to bounce back after an effort that isn’t acceptable up to his standards in his mind and he always bounces back and finds a way. He was huge. He was first star for a reason.”

The Prospects

The Syracuse Crunch had a tough week, but the people around the organization aren’t worried. [Raw Charge]

It was a rough week for the Syracuse Crunch as they dropped two games in regulation and one in a shootout to pick up only one of a possible six points. Their offense, once so prolific, continues to struggle. They scored five total goals over the three games. While untimely turnovers have plagued them, the good news is that they haven’t played as badly as their recent record would indicate. If they keep grinding away, the goals should start showing up soon.

There were a lot of moves made throughout the lower levels of the Lightning organization. Mostly, the Syracuse Crunch swapped defensemen with the Orlando Solar Bears. Then, a pair of injury updates for new guy Jan Rutta of the Crunch and Olivier Archembault of the Bears.

“It was excruciating. But when I was a kid, I played on a team with my dad coaching,’’ Connor said Monday. “We always had one goalie. So he said unless there’s blood or you’ve got a bone sticking out, you don’t lay on the ice. I laid there for a second, Chavy (trainer Brad Chavis) came out and I could just feel his disappointment all the way from (his home area of) Saskatchewan raining down on me.’’

A Bolt prospect over in the NCAA ranks earned a nice little piece of recognition for his standout play over the weekend.

By the way, for those Lightning fans who don’t know what this is like, think about our winning streak in December, but every good emotional/fan moment is replaced with the impending doom and destruction of everything you hold dear.

The AHL have announced a TV deal for the 2019 All-Star Classic. Should be fun! It’s genuinely a better on-ice entertainment product than the NHL All-Star Game. These guys are really competitive and trying, despite probably being extremely hungover/drunk from the night before. The format is a real blast from the past.

The New York Rangers celebrated Pride Night by inviting transgender hockey player (and NWHL Isobel Cup Champion) Harrison Browne to drop the ceremonial puck!

Another quick update on the NWHL: why the Buffalo Beauts are so good. This is a great read for those looking to expand their library on how hockey works in different leagues. [The Ice Garden]

There is still a lot of hockey to be played, and there’s still a lot that can go right and wrong for all five of the NWHL’s teams. With that being said, the Beauts have performed admirably despite facing the hardships of a difficult schedule, a coaching change, and the pressure of lofty expectations. If anything, we haven’t seen them at their best.

Oh, and another Edmonton Oilers update. Just fire the man men.
