Quick Strikes: One-game suspension for Dustin Brown after knee hit on Tampa Bay Lightning’s Sergachev

The Bolts

Last night, actual trash bin and LA Kings forward Dustin Brown was suspended for one game for his knee-on-knee hit on Tampa Bay Lightning rookie defender Mikhail Sergachev. Was one game enough? Will it teach him to stop engaging in plays that might be permanently harmful to the other team? [Raw Charge]

Was Dustin Brown’s one-game suspension enough after his knee-on-knee hit?

It was adequate given that Sergachev returned in the third period. 6
It was what I expected, and ultimately inadequate given Brown’s repeated offenses. 62
Players who permanently harm other players should be thrown into the Sarlacc pit, where they will learn the true meaning of pain and suffering. 10
DPOS should be gentler on a guy who plays gritty hockey like Dustin Brown (and also I am Don Cherry) 3

Last Word on Hockey weighed in about the best and worst trades made by the Tampa Bay Lightning. This one makes my heart heavy. “Tampa Bay Lightning send Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist to the Dallas Stars and in return got Jussi Jokinen, Mike Smith, Jeff Halpern, and a fourth-round pick.” [Last Word on Hockey]

Joe has never written a truer headline: Lightning a ‘little ashamed’ it has to depend on Vasilevskiy so much. “That’s the third time in the past two weeks the Lightning has faded in the third period, including almost blowing a large lead Feb. 4 in Vancouver. A 4-0 lead Thursday against the Canucks quickly became 4-2.” [Tampa Bay Times]

More from Joe. Yzerman: Overpaying at deadline won’t guarantee Cup. “I can give up five first round picks and every prospect we have and it still won’t guarantee the Stanley Cup.” We adore you, Stevie Y. [Tampa Bay Times]

How will the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow? Here’s how Mike Babcock sees it, kick the Bolts hard in the third. [Fox Sports]

I mean, obviously we’re trying to get to a point where we have four lines and you just roll them out the door and you don’t worry about it. We’re going to try to do that over time here. I thought we had lots of good, the whole team was great in the first — we came out great — we came out and really jumped. We got off it a little bit there and got carried away, it was a track meet there for both teams in the second, too many chances. Then we settled in and got it going again in the third.  — Mike Babcock

The Prospects

Later today we’ll have Justin’s Crunch Corner, but for now, please enjoy these Crunchy offerings.

Crunch push back, come back to beat Sound Tigers. “I think we all knew the situation,” Bridgeport defenseman Seth Helgeson said. “They were at the tail end of a three-in-three. A couple of forwards went out with injuries in the second period.” [CT Post]

Mitchell Stephens finding his groove in pro hockey. “Early in the year there were ups and downs but I wanted to stick with what’s been successful. With the amount of injuries and guys getting called up there was opportunity for guys to have better minutes or be on the top line. It was an opportunity for me I tried to run with.” [Peterborough Examiner]

Syracuse Crunch offering assist to local hockey coaches. “The Syracuse Crunch is holding its annual Coaches Symposium on from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the War Memorial Arena. The event is free and is open to high school head coaches and assistants as well as youth coaches.” [Syracuse.com]

The kids in the pipeline made us proud this weekend.

Olympic Hockey

2018 Winter Olympics Men’s Hockey: TV schedule, medals, results, group standings. “Even though the NHL is not sending players to the Olympics this year, there will still be plenty of reasons to watch the men’s ice hockey tournament, which is set to officially begin on Valentine’s Day.” [CBS Sports]

Olympic Men’s Hockey Tournament PRIMER: Everything you need to know! “Not gonna lie, you’re probably gonna miss a few games, but luckily the scheduling is such that many of the games happen just as you’re waking up or on your way/at work. It’ll be something to keep on in the background while you do your thing for the day!” [SCOC]

Pyeongchang 2018: USA outguns Finland 3-1, Canada easily beats Russia 5-0. “US wins 3-1, outshot 10-8 in the final period but up 42-24 in the game. Couple of good signs here for the Americans and not the performance Finland was hoping for.” [PPP]
