21 players are Lightning draft picks, including 6 of 7 picks from the 2018 draft. Out of this group, there is one first rounder, three each from the second, third, and fourth round, two fifth rounders, four sixth rounders, and five seventh rounders. 6 players appeared in at least one game for Syracuse during the 2017-18 season.

There are only a handful of teams that pending unrestricted free agent superstar John Tavares has agreed to talk to during the negotiating period heading into July 1st. The Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins both being on the list is worrisome for any team in the Atlantic Division.

The Prospects

Looking back at the 2018 Draft, looks like GM Steve Yzerman did a decent job looking for potential steals without a first-round selection. [Raw Charge]

Gabriel Fortier: High compete level and hockey sense. Put up good offensive numbers in the QMJHL. Projects as a bottom six energy forward. Needs a little more weight on his frame, but he’s a good skater with speed. If his offensive skills come along a big further, The sounds like he could be a Mathieu Joseph type prospect.

There are a lot of questions surrounding the Syracuse Crunch now, especially after news of some key free agents leaving the club have come out. [Raw Charge]

Then on Thursday, as the rest of the hockey world was amping up for the NHL draft and all of the other related activities that go along with said draft, the Syracuse Crunch released a bunch of tidbits that provided a little insight into what they are actually planning to do this summer. These tidbits also raised a few questions.

The Game

With the $5.5 million of Brooks Orpik’s contract off the books, the Washington Capitals were able to sign pending-UFA John Carlson. Yesterday, they did just that. The 28-year-old right-shot defenseman will make $8 million per year for the next 8 years. That’s a cool $64 million dollars in the bank. [Russian Macchine Never Breaks]

Carlson’s 2017-18 season was his best. He recorded 68 points (15 goals) and added 20 more (5 goals) in the postseason. That level of production for an offensive defenseman would have made Carlson the focus of a bidding war had he entered free agency, where he was projected to earn upwards of $8 million over seven years.

Speaking of Orpik, he’s about to be bought-out of his contract by the Colorado Avalanche after clearing unconditional waivers yesterday. [Mile High Hockey]

Right away, the team let it be known that they do not intend to keep Orpik for very long. Ideally, Joe Sakic would have been able to flip him - but even if they retain some of the salary, there were no takers for the 37-year old that is nearing retirement. Now, Orpik has cleared unconditional waivers, setting the team up to buyout his contract in the next few days.

So, we heard Max Pacioretty was heading to the San Jose Sharks, but then all of a sudden the trade died and Patches fired his agent. What’s going on?? [Fear The Fin]

If you followed along with the NHL Entry Draft on Twitter during day two, the final round was interesting for Sharks fans and it had nothing to do with their picks. A rumor broke that Canadienswinger Max Pacioretty was traded to the Sharks. There were overlapping confirmations and denials, and at the end of the draft, the announcement regarding Pacioretty had nothing to do with the Sharks.
