Quick Strikes: Raw Charge’s Lauren calls OHL game on World Girl’s Hockey Weekend

I’ll get to the Tampa Bay Lightning overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in a minute, but first the site has an important milestone to celebrate: Our writer Lauren Kelly was asked to provide live color commentary on the radio (Sauga 960AM) for a Mississauga Steelheads game yesterday. The all-woman broadcast, including Lauren’s fellow Ryerson classmate Julia Tocheri doing the call of the game, was on air in honor of World Girl’s Hockey Weekend. This is the first time a Raw Charge staffer has ever done live color commentary for a radio broadcast, and the first time the Steelheads have ever had an all-woman broadcast team. Lauren got to meet Olympic gold medalist Natalie Spooner, too!

Lauren says:

I was approached on Saturday morning by my classmate Julia, who did the game’s play-by-play, because the original person who was supposed to do color dropped out at the last minute. I’m extremely grateful to Sauga 960AM for the opportunity and to Julia for reaching out to me and asking me to help out. We got to the rink early to do some interviews with both teams’ head coaches, and I was nervous because it was my first time calling any hockey game in any capacity. The pregame hit was kind of a nightmare for me and I stumbled over a lot of my words, but I got a lot more comfortable with analysis as the game progressed. I think we finished strong and Julia and I fed off of each other really well. It was an amazing opportunity, especially because it was World Girl’s Hockey Weekend and we were the first all-female broadcast for the Steelheads, which was incredible.

The Bolts

Second night of a back to back, and the Tampa Bay Lightning were not helping out Curtis McElhinney out at all. It’s a testament to how bad Petr Mrazek is that they escaped with an overtime point.

The Lightning didn’t deserve a point for this performance. In fact, they probably deserved to lose the two points they got in the first game against Florida for how terribly they played. Everyone except McElhinney has some things to think about. Namely, how to play hockey.

The Lightning return to the ice on Thursday against another good team in Toronto. Let’s hope they show up looking better than they did tonight.

Fourth line has been the Lightning’s best to start [Tampa Bay Times, paid content]

You know what they say … fourth line, best line. Maybe that’s not what they say, but that’s the way it’s working for the Lightning.

In the preseason, the line of Luke Witkowski, Cedric Paquette and Pat Maroon turned in some of the team’s best shifts. That didn’t change when Gemel Smith stepped in after Paquette’s injury.
