Quick Strikes: Lightning recall Danick Martel

As we mentioned in yesterday’s Quick Strikes, the Tampa Bay Lightning have hit some injury trouble, and the Syracuse Crunch have been called to the rescue.

Danick Martel, who was acquired by the Lightning from the Philadelphia Flyers in September, has successfully skated in four conditioning stint games with the AHL Crunch and been recalled by the Lightning. As The Athletic’s Joe Smith says, this was a no-brainer move following the loss of Ondrej Palat due to a day-to-day injury. [NHL dot com]

The 5-foot-8, 162-pound forward has appeared in 203 career AHL games, registering 68 goals and 121 points to go along with 195 penalty minutes. Martel set career highs last season for goals, plus/minus (+16) and power-play goals (five). He also skated in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games in 2018, posting four goals and eight points.

We’re 10 games into the season for the Bolts, how has the team looked so far, and what could we expect going forward? [Tampa Bay Times]

Throw out the 7-1 loss at Arizona, which was almost expected because of its spot in the schedule, and the Lightning has been superb so far. Even with the debacle against the Coyotes, the Lightning is 7-2-1, which is the kind of hot start it preached about all through training camp. It’s the kind of start you need if you want to have a stress-free ride to the playoffs.

“It’s really tough coming back in this league when you look at that period,” Tampa Bay defenseman Anton Stralman said. “If I’m not mistaken I think we outshot them. A couple of their goals just find their way in. And Stepan’s goal was a nice shot and a breakdown off the rush. But you look at two of those goals coming in to the first intermission down 3-0, it’s tough. It’s tough to win games in this league. It’s really hard to find your way back in games when you’re down that much.”

Despite a slow start to the year, the young Crunch team eventually found success on the ice. In particular, Joseph stood out for his strong two-way game and ability to make the right decisions with the puck to lead to a goal. In 70 games, he scored 15 goals and led the team with 53 points, both unexpectedly high numbers for the fourth-round pick.

The Prospects

Injuries are a familiar obstacle for Benoit Groulx and the Crunch.

2018 seventh-round pick Radim Salda was the only Lightning prospect playing last night. Luckily he got an assist in his team’s loss. [Bolt Prospects]

Quebec completed a home-and-home sweep of its rival from Rimouski with a 5-2 win Sunday. Salda had an assist and now has points in all but one of his games so far this season.

The Game

ESPN did a feature on goalies and analytics and talked to both sides. It’s one heck of a piece and a definite must-read. Greg Wyshynski spoke with hockey analytics young boy Manny Perry as well as NHL goalie Ben Bishop. [ESPN]

“Last year, we were looking at some of the goalie analytics. And they have, like, high-danger save percentage, low-danger save percentage. If you look at the NHL clips, it has all the goals. We pulled up some of the goals, even on myself, and there are goals that they say are from the red line that are actually from the slot, because they clipped it wrong,” he said. “They’re like, ‘This goal is from a low-danger spot.’ But then when you watch the goal, it’s a tip in front of the net. So it’s clipped wrong.”
