Quick Strikes: Tampa Bay Lightning selects Cal Foote at 14th overall

The Bolts

Yesterday was the prom of prospect season, and Tampa Bay Lightning selected … Not Timothy Liljegren, not Kailer Yamamoto, but Cal Foote. While we all trust in the Yzerplan, we have some thoughts about this.

Cal Foote, the RHD that Tampa Bay Lightning was looking for: “The instant reaction to Foote by a lot of fans is “Why not Liljegren?” And that’s a very good question to ask. Brannstrom, Valimaki, and Vaakanainen are left-handed defensemen. After the Lightning acquired Mikhail Sergachev in the Jonathan Drouin trade, they’ve set themselves up with a very good left handed prospect to slot in behind Victor Hedman in the future. Not to mention fellow left-handers Slater Koekkoek, Dominic Masin, and Libor Hajek who all have good upside on the left side.” [Raw Charge]

Here’s the announcement article. “Not as big of an offensive force as some other defensive prospects that were available, Foote plays a strong two-way game. He has plenty of size and plays a physical game. The Rockets used him in all situations and put him on ice for big minutes throughout the season. He was also one of the prospects that we covered in our scouting series.” [Raw Charge]

Important. We’ll just have to give that a new paint job:

The Kelowna Rockets were extra proud of their kid, who sported the new 25th anniversary patch:

Lightning unveil new adidas road jersey: “Now seven years later, we feel the time has come to remove the ‘Tampa Bay’ from our road uniform for a more clean and consistent look, leaving simply our trademark lightning bolt logo. In addition, along with our great partners at adidas, we’re extremely excited to invite Lightning fans to celebrate with us by receiving a free 25th anniversary patch when they pre-order their new adidas jersey.” [NHL.com]
