Quick Strikes: Victor Hedman is the first Lightning defenseman to hit the 70-point mark

The Bolts

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 to keep the post-season dream alive. “It was set up to be a night of disappointment for the Lightning, but as the case has been during the second half of the season Tampa Bay found a way to stay in the playoff race.” [Raw Charge]

In last night’s game, Matt Hunwick interfered with Nikita Kucherov. When no penalty was called, Kucherov laid a clean hit on Jake Gardiner.  Chaos ensued.

Steven Stamkos probably won’t play a game for the rest of the regular season. “It’s probably not looking that good,” Stamkos said.  “It’s frustrating from an individual perspective where I want to be out there trying to help my team — especially at this (time of) year — but it just doesn’t feel right.” [Tampa Bay Times]

Victor Hedman keeps rewriting the franchise record books.

“Tampa Bay Lightning might just be the happiest collection of overachieving underachievers the sport has seen. Wherever or whomever these guys are supposed to be, it’s not here: alive and kicking heading into the final weekend of the NHL season.” [Sportsnet]

Jonathan Drouin’s agent Allan Walsh sheds some light on his relationship with Steve Yzerman. “He may have said things at some point in time that I don’t like. I may have said things at some point in time that he doesn’t like. We’ve always respected each other. He’s always acted as a man of honor in all of our dealings. I actually enjoy working with him very closely.” [ESPN]

Christopher Paquette (#12 in red) scored a goal for the Peterborough Petes en route to a 4-2 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs. Peterborough leads the series 1-0.

The Game

Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand received a two-game suspension for spearing Jake Dotchin. If you were hoping this would somehow humble him or make him remorseful, you were wrong. “I’m not really concerned about how anyone feels outside of the room,” Marchand said. “Things happen in hockey and again the only people I care about in this world are my teammates and my family. And I think that they have different thoughts about me. So everyone’s entitled to their opinion.” [ESPN]

Denver University forward Troy Terry recounts the decision that captured gold for Team USA in this year’s World Junior Championships. “There was no way I was going to try five hole, I mean everyone in the building was thinking it. I thought, O.K., let’s go in with speed and go high glove. But on my way down to the goalie, I saw that space. The same space that had been shown to me when I was a kid. The five hole was wide open — like bigger than I had seen all tournament. I heard that voice in my head, Shoot it, just shoot it. I let it go.” [The Players’ Tribune]

Frozen Four: Iafallo’s Late Goal Lifts UMD Past Harvard. “The seniors have meant a lot to the recent NCAA Tournament success for Minnesota-Duluth. And thanks to the late heroics of one of them, the Bulldogs came out on top in yet another close game and are now one win away from Title No. 2.” [SB Nation College Hockey]

Frozen Four: Denver outmatches Notre Dame en route to championship game. “Better team speed. Puck possession. More depth. More purpose. The last change. All those things combined to provide a one-sided victory for the Pioneers to set up an all-NCHC national championship game against Minnesota Duluth.” [SB Nation College Hockey]
