Quick Strikes: Yanni Gourde becomes a father

Yanni Gourde is a dad! Congrats to Marie-Andree for doing the work and bringing Emma into this world. And congrats to the Tampa Bay Lightning who just acquired a player with the super-human powers called dad-strength.

In different childish news, Raw Charge received a *wink* leaked email regarding Brad Marchand’s mouth activities. [Raw Charge]

Raw Charge has learned that following last night’s 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins’ forward Brad Marchand received a formal request from the NHL to “keep your mouth to yourself.” The leaked email went on to praise Marchand by saying that “You are a big boy now,” but reinforced the desire to change his behavior by following with “…and big boys keep their mouths to themselves.”

As we barrel towards Game 3, let’s look at what helped give the Lightning their result in Game 2. [Raw Charge]

The Lightning played great possession hockey in Game 1 and just weren’t rewarded for it. The handful of scoring chances that the Bruins had, they converted on. The Lightning, it seemed, just couldn’t buy a goal. So it was great to see their work rewarded in Game 2. The Lightning still had their rough patches, though.

Brayden Point was the star of the show in Game 2, and now lines are starting to be drawn between the 2014-15 season for Tyler Johnson and Point this year. Is that a fair comparison? [Tampa Bay Times]

Johnson isn’t bad at taking over big games, either. He was a major force in the 2015 playoffs, with 13 goals and 23 points. He was always stepping up, Johnny on the spot. The Lightning might have won the Stanley Cup if Johnson hadn’t been injured in Game 1 of the final with Chicago.

Associate Coach for the Lightning Rick Bowness has coached for over 30 years in the NHL, and he’s hoping this Lightning squad will get him that one last piece for his resume. [NHL dot com]

Bowness, 63, passed Scotty Bowman last season as the League’s all-time leader in regular-season games as coach, an associate or an assistant. He’s up to 2,274, including 463 as coach of the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes (he went 123-289-3 with 48 ties).

The Prospects

Alex Barré-Boulet had four points in the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada’s Game 7 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders to move on to the QMJHL finals after a 6-1 victory! [QMJHL]

Add the Gretzky Trophy to an already long list of accomplishments for youngsters Boris Katchouk and Taylor Raddysh.

The Adirondack Thunder are just hurdling through the Kelly Cup playoffs, especially after a big 5-1 win in game 2 of the second round against the Manchester Monarchs. [Raw Charge]

The Monarchs were a team the Thunder battled all season for first place in the North Division. Outside of this season, this is the third straight year the two teams are facing each other in the playoffs. Adirondack took the first round in 2016 and the Monarchs returned the favor last season.

It was a quiet week for the Syracuse Crunch on the ice, but that’s about to change starting Thursday. The last two meetings between the Crunch and the Toronto Marlies in the playoffs went the distance. It’s hard to believe that this won’t either. [Syracuse Crunch]

The Crunch closed out their three-game sweep of the Rochester Americans last week, winning Game 3 of their best-of-five series, 6-3, Wednesday in Rochester. Syracuse advances to the North Division Finals for the second straight season; the Crunch will face the Toronto Marlies for the second year in a row.

The North Division Finals open in Toronto Thursday and Saturday. Syracuse hosts Game 3 Sunday night and Game 4 Tuesday night; if necessary a Game 6 would be at the War Memorial Arena Monday, May 14.

Both coaches for this AHL second round matchup could potentially be in the NHL next season. [Syracuse]

The Game

Despite Evgeni Malkin’s return to the lineup, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost Game 3 at home to the Washington Capitals, and find themselves down 2-1 in the series. Alex Ovechkin’s baseball style game-winning goal with a minute left in the game sealed the victory for the Caps. [Pensburgh]

All this Tom Wilson horseshit has gotten out of control. The NHL is doing nothing stop him from hitting people in the head and hurting them, so he continues to hit people in the head and hurt them. 5-10 years from now we’re going to look back on this series and shit like this and fail to believe it even could have been possible. Hopefully anyways, this has to change.

Oh, right. Tom Wilson did a thing….again.

It was 3-0….. And then the Winnipeg Jets came all the way back, scored a touchdown, won the games 7-4, and left Game 3 of their series with a 2-1 lead. [Arctic Ice Hockey]

The whistles started going Winnipeg’s way, and their power play took advantage. Blake Wheeler smacked in a Scheifele rebound, to give the Jets the lead. A frustrated Pekka Rinne took exception to some Adam Lowry poking, and found himself penalized which hurt the chances of a Nashville comeback attempt.

Highlight of the Night: Sidney Crosby doesn’t have a monopoly on great hand-eye coordination.
