Dave Nonis out of consideration for Lightning GM Role

Darren Dreger has reported that Dave Nonis is out of consideration for the role of general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. A contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs is in the works.

Earlier in the evening, Damian Cristordero at the St. Pete Times had touched on the wide net the Lightning are casting regarding research into the general manager and CEO roles.  He made mention of Pierre Maguire, whose name has been popping up in various reports since this weekend.

The Globe and Mail speculated that this may be a sign the Lightning and Steve Yzerman are close…

The move may mean that Lightning owner Jeff Vinik has worked out an agreement with Steve Yzerman to become the team’s GM. Yzerman, currently a Detroit Red Wings vice-president, is considered one of the leading candidates for the job. But there is talk going around the NHL that former Lightning GM Jay Feaster, who left after Oren Koules and Len Barrie bought the team in 2008, is in the running.

Ah, uncle Jay… It was only a matter fo time before his name was invoked again.
