Lightning assign forward Michael Bournival to the Syracuse Crunch

The Syracuse Crunch got a boost today when forward Michael Bournival was assigned to them from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bournival cleared waivers Monday at noon and was sent to the Crunch not long after. Up until today, he had been on the Lightning’s injured reserve list with an unspecified aliment and had been rehabbing in Tampa.

It was reported yesterday by Syracuse’s beat writer that Bournival was almost ready to play, and the hope is he’ll be in game shape by Friday, when Syracuse plays again:

Bournival played in two preseason games with the Bolts in 2017, posting one shot on goal. He also skated in 19 games with the Lightning during the 2016-17 season, recording two goals, three points, and two penalty minutes. Bournival has skated in 108 career NHL games over three seasons with the Lightning and Montreal Canadiens, posting 12 goals and 22 points.

Bournvial started last season with the Crunch, and although he suffered some injury issues along the way, he was solid in his 38 games with Syracuse. He potted nine goals and 19 points, and had 18 penalty minutes. Bournival was most important to the Crunch during the Calder Cup Playoffs, posting eight goals and 15 points in 22 games. Those totals ranked him fourth on the Crunch in playoff goals, and sixth in points. All together, Bournival has skated in 142 career AHL games, recording 25 goals and 69 points, and 66 penalty minutes.

Bournival is much needed in Syracuse right now. The Crunch floundered during their opening weekend, first losing in Rochester on Friday and then falling in overtime on Saturday. With such a young roster – the Crunch has 9 rookies currently in their lineup – and with so few holdovers from last season left, Bournival’s experience in both the league and this organization is invaluable.
