Lightning Morning News: Connor McDavid suspended

In the never-ending session of play stupid games, win stupid prizes, Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers were both suspended for three games for their actions in Saturday night’s game. McDavid was disciplined for “intentionally strik[ing] Garland in the head with force”. The Department of Player Safety also noted McDavid’s history (which includes a fine and a priors suspension) in assessing the three-game punishment.

Mere seconds after the Connor-vs-Conor incident, Tyler Myers drilled Evan Bouchard in the face with his stick “that makes direct contact with an opponent’s head with sufficent force to merit supplemental discipline”. Like McDavid, Myers has a prior history with DoPS (two suspensions and two fines) so they levied the same punishment.

Both players will miss the rematch between the Oilers and Canucks that is scheduled for Thursday. So, we’ll have to wait to see if the two teams meet in the playoffs for any escalation to the feud. The suspension will cost McDavid $195,312 in salary, while Myers is $46,875.00 poorer. The money will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Patrik Allvin ‘still evaluating’ what to do with Brock Boeser [Canucks Army]

JT Miller has received most of the press when it comes to a potential trade for Vancouver, but Brock Boeser, a pending unrestricted free agent, could also be on the move. The forward is on pace for 30 goals, could a team looking for a little depth scoring make them an offer they can’t refuse?

Allan Walsh predicts the salary cap could rise to $97 million next season [RMNB]

Lets not kid ourselves, Allan Walsh has a vested interest in the salary cap going up next season. With 28 NHLers under his representation, he would benefit from a much higher cap. The $97 million upper limit would be about a middle-six forward more than the initial $92.5 million theorized earlier in the season. Based on the recent announcement that escrow would be ending, it appears that league revenues are stronger than initially anticipated. Teams should have an idea of what next year’s cap will be prior to the trade deadline in early March.

Breaking down every team’s draft pick situation [Daily FaceOff]

The Bolts have ten (!) picks in the 2025 draft. Sure, four of them are in the seventh-round, but the two second-round picks could be an enticing incentive for some teams in the middle of a rebuild.

Happy Tuesday, folks! We’ll have a preview up for tonight’s game against Montreal a little later than normal, but it will be there. Do good and enjoy the day!
