Quick Strikes: Let the Games Begins

The Bolts

Igor Nikonov (@nikonov_igor) and Natalia (@forgotten_night) of Raw Charge translated an October 2nd interview that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov had with Igor Eronko (@IgorEronko) of Sport-Express.ru. [Raw Charge]

“You can pick up a lot from [Alex Ovechkin]. The passion he has every time he hits the ice – eyes ablaze on every shift. He has a knack for the net: Sasha is always where the puck is going to be. It is extremely difficult to learn.” – Kucherov

JustinG. writes a second generation season prediction (that he claims are wildly inaccurate). “Based on the way Mikhail Sergachev has played in the preseason, he deserves his spot on the opening day roster. Yes, he has made a few rookie mistakes, but most 19 year-olds playing in the NHL are going to do that.” [Raw Charge]

Amalie Arena’s Thunder Alley has gotten some sweet designs for the new season!

J.T. Brown could raise his fist during the national anthem as a symbol of solidarity and strength with the hope of bringing awareness to the police brutality and minority inequality that has been occuring across the United States. “Brown, one of around 30 black players in the NHL, used this silent protest during Thursday’s exhibition game in Sunrise, finding it a middle ground for those who say kneeling for the anthem disrespects the flag. Brown said he spoke with several active military, along with his family before deciding what he felt was right.” [Tampa Bay Times]

Brayden Point took over the Tampa Bay Lightning twitter account for an hour yesterday. He answered questions related to his favourite music, food, hockeym and his time in Major Junior. This question (and response) in particular was especially good.

Ryan Callahan is excited to get back on the ice and playing, saying right now is the best he’s felt in a long time. “There’s no hesitation. For me to be effective, I’ve got to play that way. That’s when I’m at my best, is when I’m blocking shots, taking the body, getting in front of the net. That’s the only way I’m going to be successful. I have to play that way.“ [Tampa Bay Times]

The Prospects

The leadership group of the Syracuse Crunch is vast, and apparently it could’ve been larger. “Three will be selected to wear the As at home, three will get it on the road and one will swing in as needed. Erik Condra remains Syracuse’s captain, although he starts the season recovering from off-season back surgery.” [Syracuse]

Adam Erne is down with the Syracuse Crunch, where he hope’s he can show Lightning brass that he’s too good for this league. “I think just being dominant every night and proving that I deserve to be at the next level. I think I have the tools to get there, it’s just a matter of using them every night.” [Bolt Prospects]

Boris Katchouk scores twice as the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds beat the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 in overtime. “Tampa Bay Lightning second rounder Boris Katchouk (6) tied the score at three with 3:11 remaining in the third frame, setting the stage for Gettinger to come down his off-wing and snap a quick release past the blocker of Windsor’s Michael DiPietro.” [OHL]

The Game

Highlight of the Night: Devan Dubnyk pulls off a throwback-thursday, stealing a move from 1996 to stop Gustav Nyquist COLD.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 10-1. Okay, wait, let me explain. Actually, let SecondCityHockey.com explain: “In a span of 2:55 of the first period, the Blackhawks scored four goals against the Penguins and never looked back. Chicago added a fifth to take a 5-0 lead into the locker room at the first intermission. Pittsburgh finally got on the board early in the second period thanks to a Phil Kessel power play goal as the game appeared to be shifting into the Pens’ favor.

It didn’t last long.” [Second City Hockey]

Jake DeBrusk got his first NHL goal for the Boston Bruins in a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators. Louie DeBrusk, Jakes father and former NHLer, gave us one of the better reactions from parents we’ve seen. Pure excitement and tears of joy. [SB Nation]
