Tampa Bay Lightning prospect report: Samuel Walker is a champion!

The Tampa Bay Lightning already have one champion prospect in the pool this season, because 2017 seventh-round pick Samuel Walker and Southwestern won the Upper Midwest High School championships in Minnesota last weekend.

There’s a full recap of the tournament at their website, and I’ll try to track Walkers movements around the crazy world of Minnesota high school hockey as the season goes on.

Elsewhere, Taylor Raddysh is back to his fantastic self, and Brett Howden just had to go and out score him.

Ontario Hockey League

Christopher Paquette (F) – 1G, 1A, -1
Peterborough Petes – 10-5-0-1

Oct. 26th: vs Saginaw Spirit
W 5-3 – 0G, 0A, -2
Oct. 27th: @ Oshawa Generals
L 4-1 – 0G, 1A, +1
Oct. 29th: vs Hamilton Bulldogs
W 8-3 – 1G, 0A

Paquette isn’t having an impact for the Petes that they expected when they paid a lot for him at least year’s deadline. He’s not doing terribly, but at this point in his career I’d be expecting a bigger impact on the team and on his own personal stats.

Boris Katchouk (F) – 1G, 0A, +2
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds – 10-3-2-0

Oct. 27th: @ Sarnia Sting
L 6-3 – 0G, 0A, +1
Oct. 28th: @ Flint Firebirds
W 7-0 – 1G, 0A, +1

Katchouk is a strong member of the Greyhounds, and is playing responsibly on both ends of the ice. His play so far this year means we should be seeing him in release announcing camp invites to the world juniors soon.

Taylor Raddysh (F) – 2G, 3A
Erie Otters – 7-6-1-1

Oct. 27th: @ Guelph Storm
L 4-3 SO – 0G, 1A
Oct. 28th: vs Guelph Storm
W 5-4 OT – 0G, 2A, -2
Oct. 29th: vs Sudbury Wolves
W 4-1 – 2G, 0A, +2

Raddysh stepped up his play last week to 16/17 season results, and put up five points as the Otters almost went with a perfect week of games.

Alexey Lipanov (F) – 0G, 1A, +1
Barrie Colts – 9-4-0-1

Oct. 26th: vs Hamilton Bulldogs
W 6-0 – 0G, 1A, +1
Oct. 28th: vs Mississauga Steelheads
L 4-2 – No Points

Lipanov and the Colts aren’t missing the injured Andrei Svechnikov too much, but could have used him against the last place Steelheads.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

#89 – Otto Somppi (F) – 0G, 2A, +4
Halifax Mooseheads – 10-4-2-0

Oct. 28th: @ Cape Breton Screaming Eagles
W 4-3 – 0G, 0A, +1
Oct. 29th: vs Charlottetown Islanders
W 6-2 – 0G, 2A, +3

Somppi and the Mooseheads are on quite the roll the past few weeks, and they’re steadily climbing the standings and currently sit in 4th overall.

Western Hockey League

#21 – Brett Howden (F) / #76 – Oleg Susonov (D)
5G, 1A, +6 / 2G, 0A, +5
Moose Jaw Warriors – 15-4-0-0

Oct. 24th: @ Portland Winterhawks
W 6-4 – 2G, 1A, +4 / 0G, 0A, -1

Oct. 25th: @ Tri-City Americans
L 8-4 – 1G, 0A, -1 / 1G, 0A
Oct. 27th: @ Medicine Hat Tigers
W 9-1 – 2G, 0A, +3 / 1G, 0A, +6

Brett Howden had an amazing week with six points for the Warriors. Susonov potted two goals from the blue line to help the cause as well.

#25 – Libor Hajek (D) – 0G, 1A, +2
Saskatoon Blades 5-7-1-0

Oct. 24th: vs Victoria Royals
L 7-2 – 0G, 1A, +1
Oct. 27th: @ Swift Current Broncos
W 4-3 – 0G, 0A, -1
Oct. 28th: vs Brandon Wheat Kings
W 4-1 – 0G, 0A, +2

The Blades are safe as long as they stay away from the ocean it seems. Hajek is a wall on the Blades blue line, and has done his part as the forwards fill the opposing net. Again, away from the ocean.

#25 – Cal Foote (D) – 1G, 0A, +4
Kelowna Rockets – 7-5-1-1

Oct. 27th: vs Tri-City Americans
W 4-3 OT – 0G, 0A, +1
Oct. 28th: vs Prince George Cougars
W 4-2 – 1G, 0A, +3

Foote was more on the defensive game this week, but scored when it matter against the Cougars.

USHL

Cole Guttman (F) – 0G, 2A, -1
Dubuque Fighting Saints

Oct. 27th: vs Central Illinois Flying Aces
W 5-2 – 0G, 1A, +1
Oct. 28th: @ Central Illinois Flying Aces
W 6-3 – 0G, 1A, -2

The Saints captain wasn’t tops of the scorers this weekend, but the team did well anyway, winning two games with a combined score of 11-4.

#14 – Nicklaus Perbix (D) – 0G, 0A, +3
Omaha Lancers

Oct. 27th: vs Des Moines Buccaneers
W 3-0 – 0G, 0A, +3

Perbix played just one game, but was solid defensively for them and was an off the score sheet part of every goal for the Lancers.

Upper Midwest High School Elite League

Samuel Walker (F) – 3G, 4A
Team Southwest

UMHSEL Playoffs

Oct. 27th: vs CCM – Round One
W 7-3 – 2G, 0A
Oct. 28th: vs Northwest – Round Two
W 6-1 – 1G, 1A
Oct. 29th: vs – Final
W 8-7 OT – 0G, 3A

Walker and Team Southwest won the UMHSEL championship, with Walker netting seven points over the playoff games.

NCAA

Kris Oldham (G)
U. Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks
Overall: 3-2-1 / Conference: 0-0

Oct. 26th: @ Notre Dame
W 6-4 – Did Not Play
Oct. 27th: @ Notre Dame
L 5-4 – Did Not Play

Oldham isn’t getting a lot of games in this year so far. Hopefully as the season progresses he’s trusted with some inter-conference games.

#20 – Ross Colton (F) – 0G, 0A, -1
U. Vermont Catamounts
Overall: 2-4-1 / Conference: 0-0-1

Oct. 28th: vs New Hampshire
T 4-4 – 0G, 0A, -1

The Catamounts had a single game, and Colton wasn’t a huge part in the tie.

Ryan Lohin (F) – 1G, 1A, -2
U. Mass-Lowell River Hawks
Overall: 3-5 / Conference: 0-4

Oct. 27th: vs Northeastern
L 3-1 – No Points
Oct. 28th: @ Northeastern
L 5-4 – 1G, 1A, -2

Lohin turned it on in the second game of this home and home, but the River Hawks couldn’t get the win.

Johnathan MacLeod (D) – 0G, 0A, -1
Boston U. Terriers
Overall: 3-4-1 / Conference: 1-1-1

Oct. 27th: vs Denver
L 4-3 – Did Not Play
Oct. 28th: @ Providence
L 3-0 – 0G, 0A, -1

Not a great weekend for the Terriers or MacLeod.

Ryan Zuhlsdorf (D) – 0G, 1A, +1
U. Minnesota Golden Gophers
Overall: 5-3-0 / Conference: 1-1

Oct. 27th: vs Clarkson
W 3-1 – 0G, 0A, +1
Oct. 28th: vs Clarkson
W 2-1 – 0G, 1A

The Gophers went 2-2 and Zuhlsdorf played well for the Gophers keeping the Golden Knights to just two goals all weekend.
