Quick Strikes: Coyotes and Blackhawks make a trade, and the Lightning are in first place

The Team

The Tampa Bay Lightning scored four goals in the first period against the New Jersey Devils, and rode that cushion to victory, regaining first in the Eastern Conference from the Buffalo Sabres in the process. [Raw Charge]

The early moments of the first period saw the Devils apply a fair amount of pressure on the Lightning defense. Tampa Bay’s defenders weathered this early pressure by cycling the puck around the defensive zone to open up a passing lane up the ice. No pair did this better than Ryan McDonagh and Eric Cernak. These two repeatedly negated New Jersey’s forecheck pressure by simply rimming the puck around the boards to another Lightning player, or by simply outwaiting/outmuscling the opposing forechecker.

These new baby photos of Ondrej Palat are utterly adorable!

And in some Lightning injury updates, the previously mentioned Palat appears to be back soon, while defenseman Anton Stralman is still on the mend.

Cole Guttman: The freshmen stars shone Saturday night in the back half of the weekend series between the 9th ranked Friars and the 7th ranked Pioneers, with these two teams battling to a 4-4 draw. Golden Knight freshman prospect Jack Dugan opened the scoring early in the 1st for Providence, but Bolt prospect Cole Guttman struck back a scant 7 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. It was Guttman’s 7th goal of the season and vaulted him as the sole goal scoring leader among NCAA Division I freshman. Guttman was 69% on draws and earned 2nd Star honors for the game.

The Game

The Arizona Coyotes simply can’t stop making deals with the Arizona Cotoyes. This time, they dealt third-overall pick in 20015 Dylan Strome (second Strome to get traded in a week) and Brandon Perlini (whom people forget is a good player) to Illinois for Nick Schmaltz.

In other roster news, the Carolina Hurricanes have called up exciting defensive prospect Jake Bean up from the AHL. MAXIMUM BEANS! Oh, and another guy, too. His name isn’t as fun, but I heard he’s good. [Canes Country]

This will be Jake Bean’s first NHL call-up. The defenseman has spent most of his rookie professional paired with Roland McKeown. Bean has shown flashes of being an NHL defenseman but will still need to work on his skating and adding additional weight to become a full time NHL-er.

12. Tom Dundon

Whalers throwbacks, choreographed victory celebrations, a new captain, a new GM, a new coach, a new goal song, 100 per cent less Jeff Skinner, 100 per cent more Dougie Hamilton… Carolina’s Tom Dundon, cut from the Mark Cuban ownership cloth, has wasted no time remoulding the Hurricanes. The club’s still-anemic offence, however, suggests its first playoff berth in a decade might not follow. This is a problem.

Highlight of the Night: These Edmonton Oilers lost to the last-place Los Angeles Kings, by the way.
