Lightning recall two prospects

The Tampa Bay Lightning added some depth to the roster on Monday as they recalled not one, but two, prospects from the Syracuse Crunch. With Emil Lilleberg’s two-game suspension official, it wasn’t a surprise that the Lightning added Declan Carlile, a left-handed shot that has one NHL game under his belt already this season.

The Lightning also recalled forward Gage Goncalves, who appeared in 26 games during an earlier recall this season. He was reassigned to Syracuse back on January 14th after seeing his playing time start to dwindle in Tampa. The recently-turned 24 year-old picked right up where he left off in the AHL as he racked up 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists) in 6 games since his return.

It’s an interesting recall in the sense that the Lightning had seemed content rolling with just 12 forwards on the roster, but it seems that they want the extra skater for the home-stand. They did go with an 11/7 line-up in their last outing against Detroit, with Cameron Atkinson scratched from the rotation. At this point they haven’t announced that anyone is injured, and a quick check of the ice time from the game doesn’t show anything that out of the ordinary. Conor Geekie didn’t play over the last 6:30 minutes, but that could have just been Coach Cooper shortening the bench as the Lightning tried to overcome the one-goal deficit.

As for Carlile, he was with the Lightning for a game in December (and scored a goal) when Victor Hedman and J.J. Moser were battling some injuries. With Moser still a little ways away from returning, Tampa Bay needed a left-shot defender to fill in during Lilleberg’s absence. His stay this time will be short as well and there is a good chance that Carlile will be back in Syracuse in time for their game on Friday.
