Tampa Bay Lightning release details of new Reverse Retro jersey — UPDATED!

All week long the NHL has been teasing images of the Reverse Retro jerseys that Adidas has created for all 31 teams to wear at some point in the upcoming season. On Sunday, the Lightning had their turn on social media.

Since, the program was announced, some sort of homage to the 2004 jersey was predicted for the Lightning. It was semi-confirmed earlier this week when a video was released showing a uniform silhouetted in blue and black with an “04” on the back. While they had a chance to lean into fun and bring back the polarizing “Storm” jersey [ed. note – the greatest jersey in hockey history] as some other clubs like Anaheim are reportedly doing, they chose instead to honor a little history.

There is a nice symmetry to the whole thing as the current champs will be wearing a jersey styled on the sweaters that the first championship team wore. With the full design not having been released yet, there are still some questions about it, the number one being if their will be victory stripes under the arms like the originals have.

The tease photos come a day before Adidas and the league are expected to release full details of all 31 jerseys. It would be a fair assumption that they will be on sale in time for a Christmas delivery. With all of the current teams releasing their new designs, it should provide a nice boost to the hockey related revenue coffers for a league that desperately needs it.

Tampa Bay now has four official jerseys that they can wear during the season as this one joins the regular home and away as well as the all-black top that was released in 2019.

Update 11/16/20

As expected, the official images of the new sweater have been released this morning.

It is a direct homage to the 2004 championship jersey and includes the victory stripes under the arms. For those who might not be familiar with them, they were a special design tough added by Lightning founder Phil Esposito. As he explains in his autobiography, Thunder and Lightning:

“I wanted something different, so I came up with a sweater with black and white stripes under the arms, so when a player raised his arms after a goal, you could see them. That would be our special look. No one else would have that.”

So, bonus points for including those.

As for ordering these new sweaters. Per the press release: Tampa Bay’s adidas Reverse Retro ADIZERO Authentic Jersey is available for pre-order starting this afternoon at 3 p.m. through November 30 exclusively at Tampa Bay Sports locations at AMALIE Arena and International Plaza, as well as at TampaBaySports.com. Beginning December 1, the Lightning’s jersey, along with the rest of the NHL, will be available at adidas.com and NHLShop.com, with a wider availability at additional retailers starting on December 6.

So go forth and spend wisely.

Here is a quick video highlighting the rest of the league. Love the purple Kings.
