Tampa Bay Lightning sign Cory Conacher

A few years ago, the saying was born that there were actually three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and Cory Conacher scoring. Conacher’s ties to the saying were born by way of his own production while in the Tampa Bay Lightning system with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. Conacher’s production was a key part in what helped the Admirals win the Calder Cup (the AHL’s championship trophy) in 2012. His NHL debut in the lockout shortened 2013 season was notable (9 goals, 15 assists in 35 games played), as was the end of his tenure with the Lightning; he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in the deal that brought Ben Bishop to Tampa Bay.

Conacher bounced around after then, spending time with Ottawa, the Buffalo Sabres, and New York Islanders as well as being part of the Vancouver Canucks organization… all before departing for Europe and the Swiss league last season where he had 22 goals and 30 assists in 48 games last season.

While the saying was born that Conacher was such a certainty in life to score, perhaps another word was due for addition: Resumption. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that the former Lightning farmhand and prospect has been signed by the club to a one year, one-way contract.

Conacher, who stands 5’8″ and turns 27 in December, adds center depth to the organization. One question that lingers is if he will make the club though. Center depth is pretty much that -€” deep -€” in Tampa Bay. It’s notable that a major absence from the organization now exists with Mike Angelidis let go of. It leads to wondering on this writer’s part if Conacher could be a candidate for the captaincy with the Syracuse Crunch?
