Tampa Bay Lightning ECHL affiliate update: Adirondack Thunder Week 15 in Review

After a much-needed three day break after a 8 game in 10 day stretch, the Adirondack Thunder had a relatively easy week in returning from the ECHL All Star Break, with just one game scheduled.

With a chance to take over first place in the North Division—and despite receiving some reinforcements on defense—the Thunder came out with a rare sloppy performance against division foe Brampton, and were unable to make the jump in the standings.

Friday, 1/19: Brampton 4, Adirondack 1

Scoresheet

A five game homestand kicked off on Friday evening, as the Thunder looked to avenge their 6-5 loss on the road to the Beast on Sunday.

With no goaltending help available, Drew Fielding again got the start, having an EBUG back him up for the fourth straight contest.

However, the defense corp received three reinforcements. Desmond Bergin returned to the lineup after being injured on January 5th. Matthew Spencer came down from Syracuse for his third separate stint with the team. Dylan Olsen returned after a month long PTO stint with Binghamton.  Additionally, with Ty Loney and Troy Bourke out due to injuries, and Shane Conacher on recall to Syracuse, the team brought in SPHL forward Stathis Soumelidis to help the suddenly-depleted offense.

Despite only giving up 4 shots to the Beast in the opening period, the Thunder would find themselves in a 1-0 hole, after a Nathan Todd goal 11:24 into the game.

Brampton would double the lead to 2-0 halfway through the second period on Alex Foster’s seventh goal of the season.  Adirondack had a golden opportunity to finally get on the board late in the period with a four minute power play that would carry over into the third, but were unable to capitalize, even with a brief 5 on 3 chance.

The Thunder would finally break through shortly after the power play expired.  Evan Neugold would score for the second straight game to cut the Beast lead in half, 2-1.

However, Brampton would put the game away for good after a Chris Leveille breakaway goal with 13:46 remaining to take a 3-1 lead.  Todd would add his second goal with 4:25 left on the clock for the 4-1 final.

Fielding would finish the night with 14 saves on 18 shots.  Spencer and Stephen Johnson had the lone assists.

3 Stars:

3. Chris Leveille (BRM) 1 goal, 2 assists

2. Nathan Todd (BRM) 2 goals

1. Zachary Fucale (BRM) 26 saves

ECHL All Star Wrapup:

It was an interesting Monday for forward James Henry, who was tapped to replace Ty Loney as the Thunder’s representative at the annual ECHL All Star Classic in Indianapolis.

Per the Post-Star, Henry was first delayed leaving on a flight from Toronto Sunday night, after the Thunder’s loss in nearby Brampton.  He missed a connecting flight to Chicago as a result, and had to stay overnight in Canada.  He boarded an early flight Monday morning to Indianapolis, but the travel issues continued:

“When we got in the air and were coming into Indy, the visibility was so poor that we had to circle Indianapolis a few times, and we couldn’t land there, so they brought us over to Cincinnati,” Henry said.

Due to being stuck in Cincinnati, Henry missed the opportunity to play in the first divisional round of the All Star 3 on 3 tournament, a game won by the South Division 3-1.

Henry did arrive in time to participate in the All Star Skills Competition, held between 3 on 3 rounds.

The Mountain Division would eventually take the 3 on 3 crown, defeating the South 6-5 in a shootout.
