Tampa Bay Lightning’s rookie tournament in Estero, FL called off due to hurricane

According to a press release from the Washington Capitals, the Rookie Tournament that was to be held in Estero, FL on September 9 – 12 is canceled due to the approach of Hurricane Irma:

The 2017 Prospect Tournament, featuring the Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators, at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla., has been canceled due to the incoming hurricane expected to affect the region.

The Florida Panthers organization has also announced that they are pulling out of the tournament:

The club has officially cancelled its player involvement in the four-team Prospect Tournament initially scheduled for Sept. 9-12 in Estero, Fla.

In the same press release, the Panthers organization notes that BB&T Center will be used to assist in hurricane preparations. The Panthers’ arena will be used as a staging site for public service vehicles from Florida Power and Light, and will be a logistic center to support Florida’s Broward County.

The Panthers’ press release additionally states, “BB&T Center has established a hotline at 954-835-8911. Individuals are encouraged to call the hotline for the most up to date information regarding BB&T Center.”

Earlier this week, Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik pledged 1 million dollars to support Hurricane Harvey victims.

The Tampa Bay Lightning organization has yet to announce the cancellation.
