Recap of Wednesday night’s game
USA 4, Russia 3 (SO)
Troy Terry scored three times in the shootout for the Americans to ensure a trip to the gold medal game. They sent the game into overtime after coming back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits. The Americans outshot Russia 44-36 and was 1-for-4 on the power play. They beat Russia in the preliminary round, and defeated them in the elimination round for the first time in eight games.
Canada 5, Sweden 2
After going down 2-0 early in the game, a goaltending change was made. The good news: It provided the necessary spark for Canada to stage a comeback and advance to the gold medal game. The bad news: The goaltender that was pulled was Lightning prospect Connor Ingram. Ingram let in two goals on Sweden’s first three shots and was pulled and Carter Hart was perfect as Canada stormed back and defeated Sweden, which had not lost in the tournament.
Previewing Canada vs. USA
Here we are! It’s the final day of the World Junior Championships and it’s a classic North American matchup for the gold: USA and Canada.
After Wednesday’s incredible comeback, Canada suddenly looks like it has all the tools to win. It’s a team that rallied around their goalie on Wednesday after he entered the game cold — three straight games of beginning the game as the backup. The Canadians showed that even when it was down 2-0, they didn’t panic and found a way to win.
Hart stood tall in relief of Connor Ingram so it’s no surprise that Canada will go with the “hot” goalie.
The Americans, though, are coming into the gold medal game undefeated. Canada’s only blemish in this tournament is against these Americans on New Year’s Eve. The Americans have also shown they can perform under pressure and come from behind — twice — to win. Despite the fact that Team USA won the last time the two teams met just five days ago, they didn’t face Hart in net.
Expect the game to be close, whether it’s an offensive shootout or a goaltender’s battle.
