After a series of player transactions prior to the recent trade deadline resulted in the Tampa Bay Lightning acquring several early round picks in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, team vice president Dave Andreychuk has some concerns.
“I was online the other day and happened to come across some interesting statistics about how difficult it is to win the lottery and how unlikely it is to be attacked by bears. Then I thought about this stockpile of draft picks we have laying around and started wondering if my number might come up. Again.” – former all-star forward and team captain Dave AndreychukFor his part, general manager Steve Yzerman didn’t exactly dismiss the possibility.
“Look, I’ve said many times that I’m going to do whatever it takes to win a Stanley Cup. Who’s going to understand that better than somebody who has actually won the cup, like Andy? I don’t think I’d be doing my job if I didn’t at least consider looking at a player who’s probably going to be in the Hall of Fame some day.” – Lightning general manager Steve YzermanAndreychuk, whose position is Vice President of Fans and Business Development says that he’s adjusted to life off the ice since retiring in 2006.
“Yeah, I still have all my gear. But am I thrilled about the idea of packing it up and hauling it downstairs? I don’t think so. Right now, I get to attend functions, mingle with fans and work with community leaders. I’m on tv all the time and I don’t get all banged up in the process. And I have an office now, with a window where the sunshine just pours in. Look at that view! Yes sir, I’ve got to admit, I have a pretty sweet gig. Besides, if former players are on option, what doesn’t Steve just draft himself? Man, talk about a great player.” – AndreychukAccording to Yzerman, that suggestion has no merit.
“Well now, that concept is ridiculous. I’m the general manager. Where would I find the time?. My duties now keep me cooped up in my office, on the ground floor, where I have a window that looks out at a dingy brick wall, day after day. That’s where you’ll find me, doing my part and making every effort to improve the Tampa Bay Lightning…unless something were to happen that would suddenly make an upstairs office with a nicer view available.” – Yzerman
