Brian Engblom is the new voice for commentary during Lightning broadcasts on Sun Sportsg

The new voice that will cover Lightning games with Rick Peckham on Sun Sports / Fox Sports Florida broadcasts isn’t Tampa Bay Lightning alumni but a member of national broadcast coverage. Brian Engblom is the guy who takes over the role vacated by Bobby “The Chief” Taylor.

(Mind you, it was made clear at the time of the announcement he was stepping down that Taylor is still part of the Sun Sports game night broadcast team but he is no longer the color commentator. He’ll be providing analysis during intermission and likely popping up in pregame and postgame coverage.)

Engblom has been working with NBC Sports on both network and cable hockey broadcasts. He did time with the 2014 Winter Olympic broadcast team in Sochi, he’s also done the color job with the Winnipeg Jets in the past.

Engblom also was an NHL player like Bobby Taylor, the difference being that instead of a goaltender like Taylor, Engblom was a defenseman who played for the likes of the Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames before he retired from the game in the late 80’s.

This opens the door to questions about the process of selection such as who else had been candidates for the color-commentary role. Was there testing with Rick Peckham to test broadcast chemistry?

Regardless of process to get their man, Engblom is now on board.
