Dulcie Mishkin promotes breast cancer research at fundraiser walk

Dulcie Mishkin, whose name is familiar to Lightning fans due to her husband David Mishkin’s work as Amalie Arena’s radio announcer, is taking part in a Breast Cancer research fundraising walk on Saturday, October 22 in Hillsborough. The walk is part of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative. Mishkin, a survivor of breast cancer, speaks of her reasons for joining the walk on her event page:

I walk because I won. I walk so others don’t have to fight as hard. I walk because I believe one day soon, a cure will be found. Because I know I will make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer. I know that by raising funds and walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, I will help save lives from breast cancer. I believe that one day breast cancer will never steal another year from anyone’s life. Making Strides is not only my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, but it is also a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. That’s why I’m walking.Earlier today, Dave Mishkin opened up about his wife’s story on Twitter, painting a picture of a brave woman who strove hard to defeat breast cancer, and who then turned her determination into a battle for a cure.

Last February, my wife Dulcie, after undergoing a routine mammogram, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 40 years old at the time. Over the past eight months, she has undergone chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. She recently wrapped up treatment and is cancer-free.She is my hero. She has displayed so much grace, courage and dignity in the face of this life-threatening illness. More than I could have summoned, I’m certain. As awful as this ordeal has been, there have been some unexpected benefits. Her illness has led to new relationships with so many wonderful people. Her oncologist, surgeon, nurses and other survivors.

She has become especially close with two other survivors – young mothers like her. They are co-captaining a team for next Saturday’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at @AmalieArena. Dulcie is doing this in the hopes that other women won’t have to go through what she did. The fight against breast cancer isn’t only about treatment.

It’s also about early detection. Dulcie’s mammogram saved her life. Because of that test and subsequent treatment, my two kids still have their mom. And I still have my wife.
